France is bracing itself for nationwide transport strike and general disruption on Tuesday as the government and unions continued to row over walkouts at oil depots that have sparked fuel shortages.

Several of the most powerful unions called for the strikes in their biggest challenge to Emmanuel Macron since he won a second presidential term in May.

The industrial action which is likely to involve public sector employees comes after workers at several refineries and depots operated by TotalEnergies voted to extend their strike in defiance of the government which has started a process of requisition - ordering staff back to their posts.

Union activists say they want to highlight the injustice of the government move.

"Requisition is unacceptable and it is never the right solution," Force Ouvrière's secretary general Frédéric Souillot told the French politics TV channel Public Sénat.

Methods

Similar methods were used last week at the Mardyck depot in the north of the country.

Fuel workers, who are members of the CGT union, voted to continue stoppages at several refineries run by TotalEnergies despite other unions and the firm's management agreeing a deal.

The different stances between the unions have affected three out of seven of the country's oil refineries. Five major fuel depots have also been hit, the government said on Monday night.

Last Wednesday, during an interview on France 2, Macron said he expected a resolution to the disputes within a week.

On Monday he reiterated his desire for the sparring to end.

"I stand with our fellow citizens who are struggling and who are fed up with this situation," he added.

During Tuesday's action, France's rail operator SNCF said there would be severe disruptions with half of train services cancelled.

Services

RATP, which runs bus, rail, tram and metro services in Paris and its immediate suburbs, said there would also be fewer services although travel within the capital should be unaffected.

On Sunday, an estimated 30,000 people rallied through the streets of Paris to protest about the rising cost of living.

The demonstration was called by the left-wing political opposition and led by Jean-Luc Melenchon, the head of the France Unbowed (LFI) party.

Security forces fired teargas and launched baton charges after they were pelted with objects, while on the fringes of the march, people dressed in black ransacked a bank.

Some protesters wore yellow fluorescent vests, the symbol of the often violent anti-government protests in 2018 that cast a shadow over Macron's first term as president.

Grief and outrage in France over the murder of a 12-year-old girl found dumped in a plastic trunk in Paris has turned into a political row over the migrant status of the suspect.

Lola's body was found last Friday in a courtyard outside the apartment block where she lived.

A 24-year-old woman has been remanded in custody on suspicion of murder, rape as well as acts of torture.

It has also emerged she is an Algerian immigrant under orders to leave France.

Shortly after President Emmanuel Macron met the murdered girl's parents at the Élysée Palace on Tuesday and promised his full support, political opponents accused the government of failing the family.

Tens of thousands of French workers took to the streets Tuesday across the country, striking for pay hikes that keep up with rising inflation. The industrial action came after weeks of walkouts that have hobbled French oil refineries and sparked gasoline shortages around the country.

“It’s time to go back to work,” French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said Tuesday about people on strike in the French refineries of oil giant TotalEnergies.

Rail and other transportation workers, trucking and bus companies, some high school teachers and public hospital employees have heeded a call by an oil workers’ union to push for salary increases and protest government intervention in the refinery strikes.

According to the Interior Ministry, over 100,000 people marched Tuesday in multiple protests in French cities.

France and Spain have struck a new deal to build an underwater gas pipeline from Barcelona to Marseille, cancelling a long-stalled pipeline project that would have connected the countries through the Pyrenees.

The pipeline will allow Spain and Portugal, two leading importers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), to bring their excess supplies to France and other European countries.

LNG has become the go-to commodity to replace the vast volumes of Russian gas that the Kremlin has cut off since launching the invasion of Ukraine.

The European Union is trying to secure as much LNG as commercially possible in order to make it through the winter without major power blackouts or gas rationing.

The deal was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa.

2 French tourists vs Gondola in Italy

Another week, another spate of terrible behavior from tourists in Italy.

Hot on the heels of a woman posing naked on the steps of the cathedral in Amalfi, two tourists to Venice have been apprehended for allegedly stealing a gondola.

The pair, said to be French nationals, are accused of stealing the gondola from the Accademia station, beside the famous bridge of the same name, to go for a spin along the Grand Canal around 1.30 a.m. on Thursday.

The gondola's owner, Giorgio Bognolo, said the contents of the boat -- a cover, cushions, decorations and other items worth several hundred dollars -- were thrown into the canal, before it was paddled away like a canoe.

He said the joyriders were apprehended when three locals in a passing boat noticed the gondola zigzagging back and forth across the canal, and realized something was amiss.

"They did a really ugly thing -- if I did something like that in France, they'd lock away the key. They're extremely lucky [to have done it in Italy]. The police kept us separated but I'd have liked to have slapped them." said the owner.

France's Emmanuel Macron & German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and will no doubt be all smiles when they meet in Paris to talk future co-operation in Europe.

But behind the bonhomie, both sides know the EU's central relationship is under strain as rarely before.

On a host of subjects - defence, energy, aid to business, EU expansion - the two countries today find themselves pulling in opposite directions.

President Emmanuel Macron, shy of support in Parliament for his contentious proposal to raise the retirement age, used a constitutional measure to enact the bill without putting it to a vote in the powerful National Assembly.

⬆️ Tending, FSB disinformation is circulating in Europe & other areas that the Paris protests have something to do with NATO.

---> FALSE.

The fan page of a Sydney-based pro-Putin activist has claimed video footage shows “millions” of French protesters marching against globalism and NATO.

But the claim is false.

The footage was recorded at a rally in Paris against recently unveiled pension reforms, as confirmed by the original creators of the footage and the General Confederation of Labour, one of the unions at the forefront of the action.

The thuggery from <-- far left unions in France has reached a new low this year.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez warned that protesters might “hit out, often against what they see as capitalist signs,” on French radio RMC.

Thank you chief, as if that needed to be clarified. 😄

  • Picture below of them entering stores and one agitator saying to TV cameras: “If Macron wants to find money to finance the pension system, he should come here to find it.”

Did your Canadian newspapers break this news? Here in Italy it has been given only by an independent newspaper (owned by the journalists themselves, who are shareholders) and some small local newspapers.

I got it from a trending news aggregate, possible Google or Yahoo, but don't remember the original source.
