Thoughts on European History

August1991

Recommended Posts

I happen to think that Europeans are violent people - by memory.

In 1914, there was a Great War. Because people at the time forgot the Napoleonic Wars that ended in 1815.

And in 1789, people forgot the Thirty Years War that ended in 1648.

To most Europeans, the last war ended in 1945.

I reckon they'll start fighting again around 2035 or so.

====

Let's not be drawn in. Despite what they say, it's not a world war. Despite what the experts say, Europe is not sophisticated.

We have been on these two continents for 500 years.

In this time, there has been nothing like the wars of Europe.

Slavery? How about genocide?

Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan….   USA has wars, but it just fights them elsewhere.

Except when they fought Mexico…. Or the indigenous nations.   You also ignore USA fighting Britain over Canada.  (1812)

I think you’re cherry picking your data.

I disagree:

1616-1646 Thirty Years War

1789-1815 Napoleonic Wars

1914-1945 Two World Wars

====

Every third generation or so, Europeans fight each other.

Once their great-grand sons forget about the war, they fight again. Stupid.

=========

We Americans - South and North - are peaceful. We get along.

The colonial wars are nothing like the devastation of the Great War started in 1914.

In Europe, this tragedy continued to 1945.

I like driving in Germany. I like French food. But I am astonished when any American, Canadian or even Argentinian says that Europe is civilised.

Oh Jeez get your history right. You skipped hundreds of European wars, Balkan Wars, Franco-Prussian, Yugoslavia, etc. All over ethnic self determination and colonial ambitions. And quote a 160 yr old war as peace ever since....

Europe is a collection of hundreds of different groups and many nations. You are most likely of European descent so you should know better. You probably identify your roots as English, Scot, Irish, Spanish, Ukranian, German, Dutch etc. not "European". You yourself most likely have more connections to the Hundred Years War than a Latvian or Bulgarian...

The American Civil War was the most deadly in US history.

Why did you pick all of Europe, why not Asia who are I'm sure the most violent continent on earth, Europe could not even compare to the violence Asia has done.

On the contrary, people in Asia are largely peaceful - until they're not. But then it's local.

Europeans are violent in a different way.

So is Canada, America. Argentina. Yet, we in North America are in peace.

Like Austria-Hungaria in 1910, Canada today has a civilised federal state.

=====

Europe is now fighting itself.

Like in 1914, America has no reason to get involved

We Americans are civilised. It is the Europeans who are uncivilised.

Heck, they are fighting now!

The US lost 2% of its population in its civil war. Americans killing Americans.

The native population of America would most certainly disagree.

The US is the only country to use nuclear weapons on cities.

You seem to have missed my point entirely. The USA is one nation, Europe is many. Even your Austria-Hungary analogy was off as the ethnic groups were in specific areas with nationalist desires. The USA resolved it's national issues in 1865 and they were not of ethnic or cultural issues.

But how do you associate 'sophistication' to a nation where (mostly)

- utter fascination with guns?
- insistence that everyone else in the world's medical system is 'socialist'
- insistence to the creed that the rights of individuals exceeds the interests of the whole
- stubborn clinging to an antiquated system of measurements that is little more than a form of hidden trade protectionism
- massive political ignorance, the inability to distinguish the many levels of political views other than "left" or "right"

Sure they are, Russians are very friendly so is china, Laos, Pakistan, not to mention all the other stans...,Vietnam, Russia's head count might even top the Nazi's , and then there's the  middle east... very peaceful people kind you like to have as neighbors.

Not sure how they are violent in a different way ?

Truman ordered two bombs.

In Potsdam, Truman told Stalin about the bomb. Stalin, apparently like in 1939, didn't get it.

I have often thought that Putin is partly motivated by Stalin's Molotov-Ribbentrop Agreement.

Curiously, Stalin did not blame Molotov for this disaster.

Putin is no Stalin. He's smarter - he's like Catherine.

We in North and South America live together usually in peace. (I thank the people to the south for not invading us.)

====

Europeans cause havoc regularly invade each other and make wars involving the rest of us.

And foolish people post videos about how European cities are sophisticated/civilised.

Clueless.

Sweden?  Norway?
When?

Sweden got involved in the Thirty Years War.

Since then, Sweden has stood by while France invaded Germany, and Germany invaded France.

How civilised of the Swedes: stand by while Canadians and Australians die to fight these Germans.

Norway? Not part of the EU. Own currency. Limited immigration - who wants to live in a cold place? Alberta without equalisation.

Norway has the advantage of ocean access.

More than two bombs were actually ordered. I believe they were preparing for the construction of up to seven additional Plutonium type bombs for the anticipated Operation Downfall. The vision of the time was to use these extra weapons tactically.

Since they were not needed, two of these devices were used in 1946's Operation Crossroads...shots Able and Baker.

Sweden pretty much joined Germany no matter its neutral status.

Norway has only existed as an independent country since 1909. While not an actual EU member, it pays to be part of the trading bloc and is a member of the Schengen zone.
