Russia is bound to be a shithole no matter which regime they have. It is Russia after all.

Whatever their faults, the Russian people defeated two psychopaths who wanted to control all Europeans: Napoleon and Hitler.

The British can take credit for being suspicious of continental scams, bubbles, one-size-fits-all solutions - and actively getting involved.

Swedes can take credit for stopping the Thirty Years War.

In WW II most Soviet soldiers were more terrified of their own politruks behind the lines than the enemy soldiers.

With a good reason too. Going forward meant a high risk of getting killed. Going backwards meant a certainty of being executed.

Ah the good ol' NKVD...they'll make you want to fight the Germans, alright.

Not to mention a significant percentage of Russian soldier who helped liberate Germany, mingled with American and Allied forces in the immediate days before and after the fall of the Third Reich.  Stalin knew the liberators had seen the West for what it really was, and worried that the soldiers would return and spread the truth about Democracy and capitalism.

So he ended up sending them to Siberia, to work in the Gulag.

It's a better analogy for the Republicans than Democrats.  Barr, Geraldo, McConnell... burned on the metaphorical pyre of disloyalty.  Tsk tsk... they should have known to not displease Dear Leader.

Like the CPSU, the US Democratic Party is unsustainable. Their choice of Biden is like the Soviet choice of Chernenko.  (Heck, I would venture to argue that Obama was their Gorbachov. And Clinton was Andropov.)

=====

Republicans?

They've gone through their Trump hell. (But in fact, they never had to.)

The Democrats?

Joe Biden is a delay of the inevitable.

Kamala Harris is no solution.

I wish that a Russian historian could write such a book:

All because they had white bedsheets, apparently. Those good Germans

In that case, who would you say is their Vlad Putin?

1. You are missing the fact that there was no opposition party in the USSR.
2. Have they ?  Or is it just starting ?  Will a nutty old man be the symbol of the party of the old and dying ?
3. You have never spoken about demographics.  There is a large pulse of old voters who vote for low taxes and old timey identity.  How's this for a prediction: The few that are alive in 10 or 20 years won't recognize the US that young people are going to put together.

Many Americans agree with Trump.

It's a very old way of politics, this way.  And it was rejected in favour of dispassionate policy-building by different-minded rivals with a common goal: the advance of the republic.  The Soviet Union has as little to do with this as one can imagine.

If Biden is Chernenko then there will be an American Gorbachev and later an American Yeltsin.

Wait, doesn't that analogy suggest that after the American Gorbachev the country will be disintegrated? There would even be an attempted coup?

My comparison is the CPSU and the US federal Democratic Party.

Biden is like Chernenko: A name to maintain the status quo.

=====

Obama was no Gorbachev. Unlike Trudeau Snr, Obama did not question/change the Democratic Party.

Chernenko was terminally ill when he got the top job, worse than Churchill in his second stint and about as bad as FDR when he started his final term. Like any man of that age, Biden could pop his clogs at any time but he’s in better shape right now than any of them were. However, I think head of government is an ordeal better suited to somebody under 60. We seem to be realizing that in Canada.

And what’s all this dissing of Russia, one of the few countries that shares our love of ice hockey? Perhaps only Germany and Italy have produced a greater body of classical music, and in one century Russian literature grew to rival that of Britain and France. Many critics regard Vladimir Nabokov as the greatest 20’th century novelist in English, let alone Russian. The achievements of Russian mathematicians, scientists and engineers should be well known. Indeed, given the number of outstanding individuals they have produced compared to us, it’s clear their political system has been holding them back; under better management, I believe Russia could be as prosperous as Canada. Russians should be asking themselves why they aren’t.
