The USS Long Island...

USS_Long_Island_(ACV-1)_underway_in_May_

The very first CVE...escort carrier. Its main job during WW2 for which it was famous, was to deliver Marine fighter/dive bomber squadrons to Guadalcanal. Far too slow to be a fleet carrier, these tended to operate with the freighters and troop ships which had similar speeds. Still, nearly a thousand crew to operate.

The USS America (LHA-6)...baby flattop. Thanks to the addition of the F-35, amphibious assault ships can now do some of the more mundane chores that the big fleet carriers had to perform in terms of air-superiority and strike capability.

The Battle(s) of the Java Sea/Sunda Straight...February 27th-March 1st, 1942.

One of the darkest moments of WW2 for the Allies. Europe was under Nazi control and this news arrives from the East Indies.

This was the last gasp at sea for the original naval forces of ABDA...an early Pacific command. Generally...the Japanese are poised to invade Java and encounter a mish-mash of Allied ship that fight to the last.

The Campaign and Battle of Lake Erie...one of my favorite naval tales.

Wooden Ships & Iron Men (1976) was the superb Avalon Hill wargame about the age of sail...Lake Erie was one of the introductory scenarios.

The voyage of the HMLMS Abraham Crijnssen...the ship that became a Pacific Island...temporarily.

After the naval battles of the Java Sea, all Allied ships were ordered to Australia. Easier said than done.
