So it looks like Charles just destroyed....another thread, just because we took 20 minutes, to talk about something else, rather than the depressing virus. SAD

The rumour going around is that the Chinese figured out which drugs are effective to fight the virus, but they are not telling the rest of the world. The drug is rumoured to be a treatment for malaria. This could be substantiated by comments made by chinese media or officials, not sure which now but said to the effect if they figure out a cure, they won't be sharing it with the United States. Looking for more info on this.

There was a post here yesterday showing a research paper that substantiated the claim that the malaria drug shows some promise.

Today, we have a news article that the United States is interested in testing the malaria drug asap.
Trump directs FDA to examine whether malaria drug can be used for coronavirus

If true would explain why the Chinese have "flattened the curve" so suddenly and sharply, to the point the virus outbreak is almost over in China.

The promise of the malaria drug has been all over mainstream American news tonight.

California just went into lockdown.

I worry about our ability to run a proper lockdown.  It will mean getting harsh about illegal movements and suspending some liberties.  The asylum seeking through irregular border crossings will have to stop.  Quarantines will have to be enforced.  This will be an adjustment for our society, and we always have to be careful when empowering the police and other authorities, because they aren’t always the swiftest bunch.

The Chinese did extreme lockdown, as was needed.  They didn't go to the beach and party because they have freedom.

...and when they relax the shutdown the virus will reappear.

It's calculated that 95% of people in the Wuhan area have not been exposed to it yet.

There are only two ways out of this outbreak, herd immunity or a working vaccine. Everything else is just delaying the inevitable.

No worries, only lunatics will resist, you can get serious jail time right now under the State of Emergency for non compliance.

Much more laisse faire here.

It's all advisory at the moment, we haven't even been told to shut the pub so far.

Boris has quoshed rumours that London is about to be locked down with troops brought in to enforce it.

He's got a reputation for telling pork pies though...

The province has broad powers at its disposal

Search without a warrant, restrict movement, seize property, conscript labor, indefinite detention etc, but they aren't actually do anything right now but asking people to comply

Like people are scared, there's 99.9% compliance in the face of the bug, fear of the bug is making people lock down way more than they are  required to

The impossible and illegal just became possible and legal. The government announced it will turn back asylum seekers at the border. Something they've been claiming is impossible for years now.

They will also work with industry to try and get them to start producing medical equipment. Nice, but should have been done two months ago.

There's a BSL-4 lab in Wuhan, and the Chinese government had coronavirus on-hand there for years now.

1) It would be shocking to me if they just started working on treatments and a vaccine now.

2) The fact that it got out into their population and killed some of the members of their society whom they might consider to just be a drain on their economy doesn't make me any less suspicious that the outbreak of the virus wasn't an accident.

3) The fact that they're not sharing their successful treatment methods, while the rest of the world is experiencing economic meltdown, is just more reason to believe that the outbreak wasn't an accident.

4) Like I've been saying all along, I'd rather get this early version of Covid than wait to see what it's like in the fall.

So I hear there's this President going around causing political titillation by referring to something called a Chinese virus.

How would people who get off on being titillated like this react if the pandemic had started in Israel and there was this Prime Minister going around referring to a Jewish virus?

Then it would be called the Israeli virus...not "Jewish".     Jews live in many different nations.

China is getting exactly what it deserves for alleging that the U.S. Army started the virus in China.

I expect they would be calling it the Kike cold and using it as an excuse for more xenophobic, scapegoating, anti-immigrant ranting.

What we know for sure is that Wuhan was put under very strict quarantine for two months.  If we want to seriously tackle this, at least to the point of keeping the number of new cases lower than the number of recoveries or below what the system can handle, we should try to get to zero new cases as soon as possible.  That means lockdown for a month and widespread testing.  If we do that then return to public life with less crowded work and school environments, requiring self-isolation for any new cases and people who show symptoms, hopefully we can treat any new cases and reduce the spread until the weather, treatment, and immunity finish the virus off.  The aged and vulnerable will have to extend their lockdown longer and take extra precautions as we return to a new normal of working life.

I think if we do all of this seriously, we could have the economy back on its feet in a couple of months, perhaps by late May.  It would mean the economy would be salvaged and students might even finish the school year.  I think we should get lockdown underway as soon as possible.  New York State’s new policies seem about right, though it’s probably best to take the Chinese draconian approach and get to zero new cases before the return to work.

Nobody deserves China's government. China deserves better and might have gotten it if we'd been less accommodating towards dictators in general and on general principles.

You honestly expect right-wing conservatives would be as nonplussed if Trudeau spoke of an Israeli disease? I highly doubt it.

Don't care what Trudeau would speak of.    China's propaganda is just being met with counterforce.

Interesting that you picked Israel for such a scenario.

The virus has destroyed the Schengen-agreement and hence the credibility of the EU especially as when the crisis escalated the nation-states shut their borders one by one without listening to the EU. Freedom of movement across the borders was supposed to be like a force of nature against which it would be silly to fight against.
