More proud moments for our Military, brought to you by the tax payer...

The Royal Canadian Air Force is turning to contractors to address a shortage of experienced military pilots that has forced commanders to walk a delicate line between keeping enough seasoned aviators available to train new recruits and lead missions in the air.

The measure follows a similar initiative to address a shortage of aircraft technicians, which has seen 49 contractors — many of them retired CF-18 techs — hired at Canada's fighter-jet bases in Bagotville, Que., and Cold Lake, Alta., to mentor and train younger personnel still in uniform.

This issue has been brought up many times, and not only by DND, but the Auditor general and the watch dog reported it directly to the Liberal government, And now the media is once again bringing it forward to see if it will get some traction....But hey it's x mas WTF...Ya WTF we can't even hire enough pilots because of some archaic law or governmental policy which restricts the number of pilots we can train in one year....Retarded or what.... and while most of us would just say change the policy, well apparently our government has not thought of that...for some reason....but it's not because they did not know of this issue...and it is not just pilots but maintence workers as well... And while I do hold our government on all sides accountable, for treating these men and women in our Armed forces so badly, The only ones that can change it is the tax payer.... It does not take much effort to write your MP... Soldiers don't want your well wishes or your prayers this year , they want you to stir the pot into some sort of action....They don't want a raise, they want equipment that will save their lives so they can make it back to their love ones...or heres another great idea, Grab your balls and demand they close DND down,...It's not like your interested anyways..... just do something...anything..

The shortage of military pilots and technicians was first revealed in an explosive auditor general’s report earlier this year in which the watchdog took aim at the Liberal government's plan to buy second-hand Australian jets. He warned that the air force needed more personnel — not planes.

A good portion of the country takes great pride in strangling our military and watching it wither, our Military is this nations insurance policy when things go bad in the world , and when they do it is our sons and daughters that will be pressed into service, as they were in WWI and WWII, it will be to late to complain about how our military is equipped or trained when or if that day comes.... And like the conflicts we have already fought, our unpreparedness will cost undo lives, because we are to stupid to learn by our past mistakes, or is it we are to cheap.. Both I think. It is times like this it is embarrassing to be Canadian ... We will continue burying our sons and daughters because it is cheaper and easier to do...

It sounds more like the issue is that the program only allows for a certain number of pilots to be trained in a year because that's all the pilots it can process. Thus the hiring of civilian trainers.

The major problem for the air force is it's not retaining pilots because 1) they don't get to fly very often due to tight budgets and 2) the bulk of them are located at Cold Lake Alberta (population 15k), three and a half hours drive northeast of Edmonton, which is not exactly the greatest place in the world for young, hotshot pilots making good money to spend their youths. Nobody likes living there, and it's a crappy base with crappy overpriced housing. Not to mention crappy weather.

That is part of the issue , the other part is there is a lack of air force personal to maintain current fighter operations a fly and train more pilots … which translate into lack of pilots to be spread around...

it all comes down to funding...or the lack off, not to mention flying a 40 plus year old fighter does not have the appeal as say an f-35....and yes cold lake sucks, and is not the most popular place in Canada, but thats the point, want to drop bombs and shit you need someplace to do that , perhaps your right they could base them in Edmonton, fly them to cold lake to drop ordnance and stuff.. but that is only part of the problem....None of which is not going to get fixed until people make it an issue.

I'm not willing to spend a single dime on the military until its mandatory for Ottawa to get permission from a super-majority of Canadians in a referendum to send soldiers abroad for anything other than humanitarian missions.

That said I'd be more than happy to vote yes to sending a couple of our carrier groups to protect innocent people in places like Myanmar from genocidal governments.  I'd happily commit 25% of Canada's GDP to the military if missions to places like Myanmar were our priority.

What about Afghanistan? Nothing was wasted there.

I agree. Before we begin spending money on the military, lets assess these wars that we have been a part of.

We are not going to send Canadian military people off to risk their lives on behalf of anything but our own interests.

Ignoring tyranny is obviously not in anyone's interests.  How do people think this planet got into such a goddamn mess in the 1st place?

There's too many tyrants. And even where they have the choice people continue to elect more. See Trump. Polls in Muslim countries show huge numbers of people, if they had the chance to vote, would vote in a theocracy. Russians voted in Putin, even back when they had a choice and options and a free press. People voted in Erdogan and re-elected him. People voted in Duterte in the Philippines, Chavez in Venezuela, and Ortega in Nicaragua.

We're not going to fight the world on behalf of such idiots.

Your link full of shit, first off its American poll not Canadian, second 1300 vets were polled out of the what 2,000,000 that served come on now atleast try and be honest here....

The American experience is way different than the Canadian one,  no comparison at all ,The majority of Canadians supported the conflict in Afghanistan, but shortly after it became unpopular with tax payers , so much so that governmental support bled off, much needed equipment and supplies started to dry up, NO new equipment that we desperately needed...

Most Canadians don't have a clue what we did on their behalf, they don't know what we went through, the frustration we felt when we watch our own news coverage " mind you it was a week old"  was depressing to find out we were bleeding over there and our fellow country men did not give a shit..

So how can you call it a waste when you never even gave a shit in the first place...165 Canadians were killed, 2071 wounded, thousands served, because we all thought that it was a worthy cause, Such a worthy cause they made the decision to come back for multiple tours of duty even after most of Canada had forgotten all about them, refusing to support them...…So  you don't get to make that call if it was a waste , you were not there, you had no skin in the game . To those that served there I bet most would say your poll is full of shit...
