Is fast fashion killing the planet and our ethics?

It's less and less like that.

Many in my generation (23 and under) are not flashy, trendy kinds but rather simplistic.

Remember how in the 2000s everyone had to have a visible brand on their shirts? It's gone. Many are just wearing white/black shirts with jeans/black skinnies. Some are flashing with their shoes, but it's getting rarer too, it's mostly the poor and ethnic minorities who flash their Jordans than anything else.

I know some people are slaves to fashion.  I have never been.  When raising my kids in the 2000's, neither of them were really "into" any certain brand nor did they "have to" own certain items.

I have my own sense of style so I love thrift shops and vintage stores.

That said, I will occasionally buy an expensive piece, but they are generally timeless styles.  I once spent over $200 on a dress suit and I'm still wearing the pieces 25 years later, but in different ways.  A couple years ago, I found a jacket I loved - it was almost $300 and I pair it with a tank top from the dollar store.  I like when people ask me where I got something I'm wearing and I can say I paid $3 for it at a thrift store or $15 at a vintage shop.
