The Americans can afford refrigeration.  Cheese and dry milk store more easily.

...other products could be sent over for "storage" too.     It would just be for "storage"...wink...wink.

If there was a demand sure. It sure seems US manufacturers like buying Canadian Aluminum. They'd even be willing to pay 10% more.

No, immediate demand is not required.   Just want to place lots of product in Canada for "storage".

It's just for "storage"....."storage".

So what were have here is Americans could use the stored product they bought before Trump's tariffs and we will start paying 10% on aluminum products imported from the US on September 16th. Then when the tariffs kick in on both sides we are going to wind up paying 20% because the 10% tariff going into the US and 10% coming back on finished goods.

Yeah, this is absolutely brilliant Freeland. Trump is looking for attention, we Canadians would have been far farther ahead if we had just ignored it.

Our tax dollars are going to a whole bunch of economic and political experts in Ottawa and this is all they can come up with? Tit for tat? We don't need these geniuses if we are just playing copycat.

The WTO ruled against the US' protectionist lumber tariffs and the Trump administration simply says they'll ignore the ruling. And since the US has blocked all appointments to the WTO appeals court they can't even hear an appeal. I think the US is the world's most protectionist state now, aside from China. And none of it does America any good. For example, the US doesn't make enough aluminum anyway. A tariff on Canadian aluminum simply means more expensive products for US manufacturers. It also spurs the US to import more aluminum from Russia - not as cheap as Canada, normally, but thanks to Trump, much more competitive now. Russian aluminum exports to the US have gone way up.

The same goes for lumber. The US doesn't produce enough. Slapping tariffs on Canadian lumber increases the cost of wood for American home-builders, making it harder for Americans to buy a home. But it makes Russian lumber more competitive and so Russian exports of lumber to the US have soared.

A cynical person would wonder if American economic policy was being drafted in Washington or Moscow.

80% of Canada's forestry production is exported to the United States...68% of U.S. lumber imports.

Softwood lumber exports are far more important (economically and politically) to Ottawa than to Moscow.

This has been going on for 40 years...long before Trump.

I'm trying to see how any of that is relevant and failing.

Of course you are failing to see the obvious.

Canada dominates U.S. lumber imports while maintaining protectionist trade policies (e.g. dairy), but Russia is the bad guy ?

Ottawa gets butt hurt a lot more than Moscow.

Canada dominates US imports because it's right there and has a lot of lumber. Russia has to ship theirs by sea, which costs more. That's why Trump had to make it easier for them.

Fine by me...U.S. imports and exports are far more diversified than Canada's, which is why Canada is so vulnerable to protectionist U.S. trade policies, regardless of who is president (see Obama's "Buy American" policy).   The U.S. actually produces more board feet per year than does Canada.

Canada should spend more energy developing other export markets, instead of being so dependent on the U.S. (80% of forest exports !!??).  Clear cut your beetle infested forests and dump it on the rest of the world too.

Aluminum, steel, lumber, whatever...just because Canada is about hewing wood and drawing water does not mean it will be able to dump most of it  on the USA.

More tarriffs on the u.s. coming soon.

I can't wait to see which products they are going to select.

So why did it take Trudeau so long to respond ?

Products will be limited to related U.S. aluminum tariff....not ketchup or whiskey.

Too busy with the We scandal, Morneau corruption, shutting down Parliament, and buying vaccine from Trump's "Warp Speed" program ?

Yeah, that's it...put tariffs on U.S. manufactured vaccine that Canada buys !

Mostly polypropylene, polyisoprene, and chrome-nickel plated steel.

Whatever it takes to stop the Canadian dumping.

If only we could figure out how to get the u.s. to stop dumping their smoke on us.
