Actually, he imposed the tariff to please some voters in Ohio and other swing states.

Are you as ignorant of the basic realities of economics as he is? He announced, in effect, higher aluminum prices at the factory which will have to pay those higher prices.

For every job in aluminum the US will likely lose 5 in manufacturing.

If pleasing Russia also drives Canada nuts, then that is just a side benefit.

There was a time when Republicans hated Russia. Now they want nothing more than for Russia to take over their country.

So what ?   The US has lost millions of jobs due to the pandemic already.   Do you really think Americans go to retail outlets worried about the impact of aluminum tariffs on Canada ?    Get real....

Trump is not a true Republican, and I have never been a Republican.

Canadians use Russia as a bogeyman to try and influence U.S. policy...even before Trump.

...that's what NATO deadbeats do.

Who said anything about Canada? Your own chamber of commerce says this will cost American jobs. There is no industry in the US which supports these tariffs. Including the aluminum industry. Because it's bad for America. Evidently that's not something that's important to you just so long as Trump pisses off Canada.

Trump's original steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada were net positive for U.S. production capacity, the stated goal back then.

Since when does Canada care about what is good or bad for America...more like Canadian self interest.

Oh, so scary.   Putin is coming !

The U.S. import and export economy is far more diversified than Canada's....there's your trouble...long before Trump.

It should be noted carefully by all you Trump haters that the more Canada push itself away from doing business with America, the more we go in with China. They are our new socio-economic task masters. Let's just say it's not the kind of culture we want to embrace for our future, imo. Totally the wrong move.

Meantime you financial big wheeler-dealers would do well to brush up on Cantonese.

Not for manufacturing. It cost manufacturing jobs because their input costs rose.

And now he's slapping a tariff on Canadian aluminum for 'national security' while increasing Russian imports!

Why are you so obsessed with Russia, even as Canada is a NATO deadbeat...a Trump refrain.

What is so special about Canada in this regard ?

Trump's policies did increase manufacturing jobs....

Massive tax cuts will spur industrial growth. I never denied that. But when you have to borrow every penny of the money given away in those tax cuts you're simply creating a huge weight on future growth.

And my point was that his earlier steel and aluminum tariffs were stupid and cost manufacturing jobs.

Because Canada is obsessed with the United States.

US manufacturing jobs were lost due to the tariffs. You are trying to conflate overall job gains over the last four years through massive tax cuts with the impact of aluminum and steel tarifs. Which is incredibly dishonest, but about what I'd expect of a Trump supporter.

US manufacturing jobs are gained and lost for many reasons.   And there was nothing special about the aluminum and steel tariffs among many other trade measures that Trump invoked except that Canada got so butt hurt because of the way he did it (Section 232).

Trump also went after Canada to stop the dumping, transshipments, IP theft, and existing protectionist tarrifs on American products (e.g. dairy).

I think we would have earned honorable mention from governments around the world if  Freeland had said 'okay' while twirling her finger around her temple.

That's great...because the United States government did 100% the right thing in response to new Canadian dumping...errr..."storage" across the border.

Canadian aluminum-makers have said they switched production during the COVID-19 pandemic as demand for higher-end products crashed, and the resulting aluminum has been sent to the United States primarily for storage.

This topic is just the Liberals trying to draw attention away from their laundry list of scandals.

“WE’RE THE MOUSE THAT ROARED!!!!”

Yeah ok, put a tariff on aluminum but don’t bother to stop our PM from treating the Bank of Canada like his personal chequing account, and don’t bother to stop terrorists from coming here to commit attacks, recruit, and retire with a pension.

Chrystia Freeland can go to hell.

The irony is that there's zero reason for a Canadian company to import raw Aluminum from the US.

Then surely Canada would not mind if U.S. dairy producers "stored" thousands of tonnes in Canada, right ?

Quote

7.  Canada is the largest source of United States imports of non-alloyed unwrought aluminum, accounting for nearly two-thirds of total imports of these articles from all countries in 2019 and approximately 75 percent of total imports in the first five months of 2020.  The surge in imports of these articles from Canada coincides with a decrease in imports of these articles from other countries and threatens to harm domestic aluminum production and capacity utilization.

It would probably spoil. Dairy is a perishable item, I'm not sure if you were aware of that.

The Americans can afford refrigeration.  Cheese and dry milk store more easily.

...other products could be sent over for "storage" too.     It would just be for "storage"...wink...wink.
