Trump does exactly what the Russians wanted.

Putin must consider Trump the best investment he's ever made. For the paltry cost of some hacking and social media posts he gets control of the US President. Ordering US troops out of Syria is harmful to the US, harmful to their allies, and harmful to the world, but certainly pleases the Russians, Iranians and Syrian government. His party is opposed to it. His diplomats and advisors are opposed to it. The US military is opposed to it. So why do it unless it's because he was ordered to?

Resistance to the move was strong among some in the administration. A senior administration official told CNN's Jake Tapper that the President's decision to withdraw US troops from Syria is "a mistake of colossal proportions and the President fails to see how it will endanger our country."
"Senior officials across the administration agree that the President's decision-by-tweet will recklessly put American and allied lives in danger around the world, take the pressure off of ISIS -- allowing them to reconstitute -- and hand a strategic victory to our Syrian, Iranian and Russian adversaries," the official said.

Getting out of Syria is the smartest thing Trump has done so far.  It was Syria and Russia who defeated ISIS.  Maybe Syria has a chance to rebuild and we can then stop the flow of people getting the F out of the M.E. who are flooding Europe and elsewhere.

If it was the smartest thing to do his defense secretary wouldn't have resigned. All his generals and diplomats, including Mike Pompeo wouldn't have been against it. What this does is give a free hand to Turkey to slaughter the Kurds who have been the best, most loyal US allies in the region. He is abandoning them, and that is going to send a strong message to everyone else in the area who even thinks about partnering with the US, that they are an reliable allie who will abandon them without warning.

The US has treated the Kurds like shit for decades. They deserved their own sovereign state since day 1, and the US could have done it in 2003 if it gave a damn. The mere act of allowing Turkey into NATO was a disgrace given that it has engaged in killings and oppression against the Kurds continuously from decades ago to the present day. The US doesn't reward loyalty of disenfranchised allies like the Kurds and never has. Any potential ally of the US better make sure they are getting paid enough in the present, because promises about the future count for nothing. As for the US not being a reliable ally, that's the statement that Trump has been screaming to the world at the top of his lungs since he got into office.

Trump campaigned on increasing the budget for the US military, which had had its budget cut under Obama (although the fault is really in the Republican congress).

Now he wants the military's budget cut. Where did this idea come from? Usually from FOX news, but it's not FOX calling for military cutbacks. FOX is all 'rah-rah our boys' when it comes to the military.

Why would Trump go against his base and against FOX news unless someone told him to do it? And who would like the US military budget cut more than the Russians?

There's no denying that the only entity that this decision benefits is Russia. It's all the evidence you need that he's colluding with Russia.

This week he also removed sanctions on Russian Oligarchs.

I think he's at the point where he doesn't care and only wants to please pundits on Fox News. Republicans need to grow a spine. If this is what your party is, then get a new party because it's not a Fiscally Conservative Party that cares about American Interests.

But the pundits on Fox News are against pulling out of Syria.

So what if Putin likes it?  Policies need to be judged on their own merits.  Obama's decision to pull out of Iraq was loved by the Iranian regime.  You know, the country that constantly chants death to America.

However, just for the record I am against this decision, the Kurds need to be protected within any framework to scale down in Syria.

This policy has no merit. No one else in the administration, the military or the state department agrees with him, nor do Republicans in congress.

And why is Trump suddenly wanting to cut the military when he campaigned on building it back up? He bragged about how much extra money his administration was going to spend and now he's complaining about how much money the US is spending?

The policy has some merit in that many are tired of endless and expensive wars in the Middle East.

Me too, except the choice appears to be either fight them over there, or ignore them and fight them over here when they come and blow up more buildings.

Democrats and the mainstream media have made it completely toxic to talk to Russia.  But you can’t help solve the Syrian problem without Russia involved.

I don't buy this. Arrangements with other countries take place behind the scenes, not over twitter or in person.

Yes I agree.  But I don't many people working with the administration would like it to be reported by the media that they're having behind the scenes discussions with the Russians.  You can imagine people running with that story filled with all the speculation and innuendo fit for cable news.

I don't think the media have to make the stretch that people talking to Russia over Syrian strategy is a dangerous thing when they have Trump fawning over Putin in public and saying he believes Putin rather than his own intelligence agencies.

Of course, that might have been must cowardice on Trump's part, combined with a complete inability to finesse an answer. I've noticed that while he got his reputation as the tough business guy who says "You're fired!" so sternly on TV he seems utterly incapable of firing anyone in person. Everyone he's dumped he's sent someone else to do it while they were in another building - or sometimes another city. So saying he believes them while standing in Putin's presence wouldn't necessarily have been the thing to do for him. A more skilled person would have simply talked around the question, but Trump's verbal skills are at a very low level (as are his written skills - as are his everything-else skills)

According to inside sources Trump was merely the figurehead on the Apprentice.  He was basically told what to say and when to say it by the show's directors.  Like all things Trump it was pretty much smoke and mirrors.  But it is entirely possible that without the false image projected by the show Trump would not be president.
