A group of Arab intellectuals endorsed by the Bush administration turned their wrath on America yesterday, accusing it of undermining reform in the Arab world by backing Israel, weakening the United Nations and creating chaos in Iraq.

President George W Bush has made the promotion of democracy in the Middle East a key priority, saying that reform was the best means of undermining violent Islamist groups.

He eagerly seized on the work of the same Arab scholars who drew up a report in 2002 that bemoaned the "democratic deficit" in a region ruled by all-powerful kings, princes, sheikhs and presidents for life.

But their latest "Arab Human Development Report", issued under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will make much less comfortable reading in Washington.

"As a result of the invasion of their country, the Iraqi people have emerged from the grip of a despotic regime that violated their basic rights and freedoms, only to fall under a foreign occupation that increased human suffering," said the authors.

Now where are all those "happy Iraqis"

Arabs and Jews don't really mix over there. I think because of the fact that the US supports Isreal they have a star next to their name on some Arab agendas.

Maybe the UN should just stick to serving food around the world. It's obvious that Iraq didn't obide by the resolutions that they signed and the UN didn't nothing but debate it to death. Maybe, just maybe, if the UN got involved in Iraq they could turn things around, but then again, maybe not.

arabs that dont like jews unthinkable.

Oh, I didn't think Bush was Jewish. He endorsed these scholars.

Oh Cameron; get your information up to date. There was no viable threat from Iraq and no excuse for the invasion of Iraq or the torture of political prisoners. Plus a whole long list of other USA government tactics that are unacceptable.

Saddam invaded another country. The UN acted (WOW!) and intervened. Iraq signed resolutions and treatys. Iraq broke them. The UN didn't do anything. Here are some bags of food UN, go feed someone.

The US is doing what should have been done after the first war. Saddam is nothing but a two-bit pirate whos reign should have ended a long time ago.

We didn't start the fire

It was always burning

Since the world's been turning

We didn't start the fire

No we didn't light it

But we tried to fight it

We didn't start the fire

But when we are gone

Will it still burn on, and on, and on, and on...

we cant banter sementacis all day long, but who do you really think they an arab intellictual groups is targeting arabs in isreal.

When I hear the term "U.S. support of Israel", I take it to mean the government and state of Israel. I'm fairly certain that the $2.1 billion per year in military aid and $600 million per year in economic support coming from the U.S. is not going to individual Jews within Israel.

imagine being the minority in a part of the world where basically 90 percent of the population of the surronding countries wouldnt say anything if you were all thrown in the ocean or shot in the back. we back israel to avoid a massacre. From the day israel became a country they were immediatley attacked.

So you know your history. Good for you. What does this have to do with the alleged hatred of Jews by those Bush-approved Arab scholars?
