Complexity of Forum Software

August1991

Recommended Posts

Once upon a time, this forum was a simple way for people in Canada to stop by and chat about politics - maybe sports/movies.

Now, it's not. The current forum software has too many inserts/links/likes/submits/checks/threads/personal info/options/font styles/replies/media boxes.

Let's be honest: mapleleafweb amounts to several hundred Canadians discussing politics - and a few thousand lurkers from around the world. In this crazy world, it's a website of civility.

=====

Greg, Lethbridge, please return this forum to the way it once was. I prefer the older forum software.

I have explained this before but I will try a new way:

You 'rent' software.  This is not created by Greg, but he rents it from Invision and they have no reason to support older versions.  Just like you can't ask the Globe and Mail to go back to the font they used in the 1990s, you can't ask Invision to keep old versions around for one site like MLW.

If you use it for a while, all the stuff you don't need drops away, and all the stuff you use becomes simple, and you forget what the older site looked like.

C'mon August, its as easy as falling off a log. Exactly what is the issue?

Are you 107 years old or something?

It's full of fluff.  The Side bar clutters the page with redundant info that can easily create a thread , driving discussion. You cannot reply to the side bar without going to another page. Should really be a dynamic thing, but again, takes a way from thread/topic creation.

It's also how the site may be used. I will guess that a good deal of us still use a desktop/laptop but there are some who do it on a mobile device. I am sure the site can pull those stats easily from logs.

And with the rise of other social media and people screaming for cross platform integration you are not going to go back to the other way.

It's the new Software as a Service model. Monthly subscription fees replacing one time costs for continual income for development.

107? No, but I'm good at Fortran.

This forum is not Facebook. It has existed for many years. To my knowledge, Lethbridge/Greg are not seeking new members, or new eyeballs.

Old works, sometimes. And sometimes it doesn't. Compare Voltaire with Napoléon - the careful thought of people in the Midwest vs mobs in LAX/NYC.

Strongly agree - about the current software.

At its origins, this forum was remarkable.

Greg, please keep the forum the way it was - while allowing discussion. Software is not the problem.

Sorry, Michael, disagree.

Greg, Lethbridge, could resort to an older version of Invision. No need to update, except for security issues.

For several hundred years, people speak. Heck, for several thousand/million years, people have a voice.

Human's desire to improve and push, push, push, is more the opposite of entropy - it's mimicry of the universe's basic directive.

Some humans like to progress for sure but others not so much the desire to stop and even go backwards is pretty strong too.

How do you know ?

Michael/Greg,

I'm still posting here.

BTW, where is Kimmy? Argus?

=====

To return to my OP, I would prefer a forum software that does not ask my preferences, links to my current job applications.

Years ago, this place was cool.

What sidebar?  I don't think I have that.
