Climate Change policy killed by social justice warriors

Recommended Posts

Climate change policy and actions have been co-opted and undermined by social justice warriors...good job !

There were many hints along the way...remember the Kyoto Protocol from way back in 1997 ?

So much excitement...so much media attention...so little action !   (More GHG reductions were actually accomplished by a good old fashioned economic recession.)

The descent of climate change into the abyss of social-justice identity politics represents the last gasp of a cause that has lost its vitality. Climate alarm is like a car alarm—a blaring noise people are tuning out.

This outcome was predictable. Political scientist Anthony Downs described the downward trajectory of many political movements in an article for the Public Interest, “Up and Down With Ecology: The ‘Issue-Attention Cycle,’ ” published in 1972, long before the climate-change campaign began. Observing the movements that had arisen to address issues like crime, poverty and even the U.S.-Soviet space race, Mr. Downs discerned a five-stage cycle through which political issues pass regularly.

Oh, and this slow loss of vitality started long before Trump became president....even Canada bailed on Kyoto in 2011.

There has been a markedly reduced level of climate change debate even in this forum.

So what do you think will be the next phase in the Climate Change movement, besides dwindling lip service ?

(I heard that Canada wants to build another bitumen pipeline to the West coast....probably just a rumor by climate change deniers.)

Social justice ideology destroys all it touches. In time, the world will learn. Until then, much will continue to be sacrificed on the altar of social justice. Freedom of speech, freedom of thought, the rights of individuals, the presumption of innocence, science, reason, democracy, prosperity... all will be sacrificed to feed the beast. But as with fascism and communism, one day this new scourge too will be put to rest.

GHG emissions will be solved through innovation in technologies like energy storage, electric transport, and solar energy naturally out-competing their predecessors. That is, if tech companies can get there before social justice people burn it all down because they don't like "tech bros".

The world sometimes learns, but it easily forgets. Just a generation or two of peace and prosperity is all it takes.

Trees are an innovative, low-tech solution. Or perhaps other fast-growing crops. There should be an effort to re-plant some of the large deforested areas.

A told-you-so phase running parallel to a worsening environment followed by a rise of right-wing condemnation of left-wing policies that failed to prevent disaster. Right-wingers will claim they always wanted to do something about it but...effing lefties wouldn't let them.

Sounds about right.  They'll conveniently forget that they consistently chose economics over environment.

Here in Seattle, businesses supported a proposed carbon tax, but the left shot it down because it didn't sufficiently redistribute money to social justice causes for their tastes. I think this narrative will repeat itself, as environmentalist organizations become co-opted by social justice people, who don't give a damn about the environment except for "environmental justice" which just means making sure white people suffer as much as others might.

Good example of exactly what the WSJ op-ed is about...SJW's have co-opted climate change for their own nefarious causes...not polar bears.

Here in Canada, we have an opportunity to make a big difference in global emissions by sending oil to China to displace some of their coal - but the Social Justice gang (AKA Eco-Nuts) want one thing only - to keep fossil fuels in the ground. They won't of course, howl at the US or China - just Canada - the Sucker Nation.

AGW has been the greatest scam in modern times.   It is now suffering a well deserved slow death.

By that do you mean AGW doesn't exist, or do you mean that we have all been fed a steaming pile of horseshit about what we can and should be doing about it?

De-industrialization. All our industry moved to China or Mexico, and now they're buried under their own stench. The Ohio valley is a ghost town.

We didn't "solve" jack squat. We didn't "do" anything, except find the cheapest way to manufacture our goods without those pesky unions and environmental regulations getting in the way.

Works for me - let 3rd world and "developing" nations wreck their own environment.

Of course it creates corollary problems - like, we don't jobs for 5-10% of the population, which creates a permanent unemployable underclass because in a tech society there is nothing they are capable of doing. You only need so many garbagemen.

Works for me. Let them eat cake.
