When Tim Thomas refused the White House invitation in 2011, many conservatives applauded him for taking a stand for his personal beliefs. And many liberals were miffed that he was disrespecting the President or creating disunity or whatever. Here in 2017, liberals are applauding people like Steph Curry for declining the White House invitation, and conservatives are miffed at people like him for disrespecting the President or creating disunity or whatever. Same old, same old. When the our side does it, it's courageous and great! When the other side does it, it's offensive and terrible. In regard to Sidney Crosby, I share the view expressed by William Shatner and echoed recently by PK Subban regarding the anthem controversy. The Shat's view is: "I'm a guest in this country." I don't remember too many people applauding Thomas (although, i'm sure some did), but his team turned on him after that stunt. Crosby and Subban are both class acts! They might just as well spit on the flag, or trample it. It's not the right venue either since people go to sporting events for a different reason. If actors link arms, and kneel down to make a political protest at an Opera house - you think some people won't be p***ed off? Their inappropriate behaviour had caused divisions among sports fans. They're protesting against the belief that racist police are shooting down Black men because they're Black. These protestors don't give a shit about Justine Damond or Dylan Noble or any other white people killed by police, armed or not. Second, they seem to make no distinction between criminals resisting arrest, even armed ones, and innocent people just walking along the street whistling to themselves. To hear most of the BLM crowd, almost all Blacks killed by police did nothing to provoke the violence other than being Black. That pisses a lot of people off. If you look at the last couple of posts I made on the You Tube thread under culture you'll see just how blazingly fast these things can escalate. Spitting and trampling upon such a flag would be no different than spitting or trampling upon the flag of Nazi Germany. You sure have some weird notions about freedom of expression, Betsy. It doesn't stop at the Opera house door and it is the express purpose of freedom of speech/expression to cause divisions among anyone one wishes to cause divisions among.
