NAFTA negotiations.

Recommended Posts

The head of the autoworkers union, Unifor, was on CBC today talking about NAFTA.  He seems to know a lot about it in the auto manufacturing business.  It sounds like it will be a complex issue.  Parts are manufactured in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.  The big problem he said is Mexican auto parts manufacturering workers are paid on about $2 an hour, causing the manufacturing of parts to be moving to Mexico.  He claims that will have to be solved.

Yes...in fact, Jerry Dias (Unifor) agrees with President Trump that Mexico's low wages are the main issue.   He can say things that Freeland or Trudeau would dare not utter in public, particularly if it supports Trump's positions on NAFTA.

Nearly two-thirds of Canada's oil imports come from the United States....that's much higher than the percentage of U.S. oil imports coming from Canada (about 39%).   Looks like oil will never be a NAFTA weapon.

Yes, Canada has made a decision to import more of our oil from the US. There however is absolutely nothing stopping us from importing from other nations as we have done in the past. Canada is not dependent on the US for oil in the slightest.

Oh but it is...Canada is dependent on oil and distillate imports from the United States for a variety of reasons, from the lack of oil pipelines, refining capacity, regional infighting, and lack of capital investment (70% of Canada's oil production is foreign owned).  Canada began screwing itself decades ago with P. Trudeau's NEP.

The CBC article highlights the realities of Canadian oil imports.

Is that why there was all that arm twisting to finally get Nebraska to allow the Keystone XL to send y'all some of that tar sand oil?

Justin Trudeau is going back to the U.S....again...for the 15th time as prime minister at last count.   He just can't stay away from the USA.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-nafta-chicago-axelrod-democrats-1.4495369

In contrast, Donald Trump has yet to visit Canada as president, because he doesn't have to.   Maybe he will go for the G-7 meeting ?

Why would Trump want or need to visit Canada anyway. More than likely Trump will be met by just another bunch of clueless liberal buffoons who will have signs up saying go home you racist and anti-women. Canada is full of those fools, don't you know? It is those fools that have over the decades made Canada not so great. Aw well.

Canadian oil rigs leaving for the U.S. because it's better for business "down there"....duh !

Quote

..."Most companies with the means to do so are exploring opportunities down south," said CAODC president Mark Scholz on Tuesday, pointing out that the Trump government's recent corporate tax cuts are making the U.S. even more attractive.

"It's easier to do business down there, you can operate year-round. The margins and economics down there are much better. Both the federal government and the state governments have really indicated they are interested in expanding oil and gas development and exploration."

Uh-oh...another American thing for Canadians to boycott because of a Toronto plant closure...add Campbell's soup to the list.

I usually don't eat canned soup, so nothing much to boycott for me. I do have a few cans of St. Hubert soup in the pantry just in case, they are manufactured just north of Montreal (Blainville).

Forget Trump and NAFTA...now even a "liberal" U.S. state is closing the door on trade with a Canadian province.   New York has a brand new "Buy 'Merican" law on the books...signed by Gov. Cuomo.

With a $13.3 billion dollar trade deficit with Ontario, it looks like Cuomo is playing with fire.

The same Cuomo who condemned Trump's tax plan and said that the president 'Never Really Understood What Made America Great in the First Place' ?

Yep...one and the same.    Must be election season again !

I have ordered some parts from US vendors in the last month, and noticed a couple of them arrived with "Made in the USA" stickers on them. One came with "Made with PRIDE in the USA". Haven't seen those in a long time.

Yep....it is game on.   U.S. manufacturers did this back in the 80's too.

Yup, remember that as well. I got a stove just over a year ago with a "Designed, Engineered, and Assembled in the U.S.A." label with a flag roughly similar to the one above on it. I did note it didn't say where the parts came from.
