Trump and Canada

Recommended Posts

This CBC analysis wonk has already linked Canada's success to the newly minted President Trump.

But Trump is not responsible for Canada.

What is Justin Trudeau getting paid for ?

If the Trump administration hurts Mexico, destroys NATO or undermines the European Union, we will feel an economic pinch in Canada and we could be called on to increase our security commitments to allies.

Oh the horror...Canada might have to spend more money on defense instead of depending on the U.S.

Canada is America's largest customer . We purchase more than all of Europe combined. When we speak that is how we speak as their biggest customer. Believe me, no capitalist wants to lose their biggest customer.

Trump is not a capitalist, all he has done was lose money his whole life, 8 times bankrupt.

The U.S. export economy is far more diversified compared to Canada, which sends about 75% of exports to a single nation.   Canada should have diversified a long time ago.  Here are the top ten nations for U.S. exports...Canada doesn't even break 20%.   China is now the U.S.' largest trading partner for total trade.

https://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/statistics/highlights/toppartners.html

1 Canada 245.6 18.5%
2 Mexico 211.8 16.0%
3 China 104.1 7.8%
4 Japan 57.6 4.3%
5 United Kingdom 51.1 3.8%
6 Germany 45.0 3.4%
7 Korea, South 38.0 2.9%
8 Netherlands 37.0 2.8%
9 Hong Kong 31.9 2.4%
10 Belgium 29.9

2.3%

Canada's Trudeau and premiers are freaking out over what to do about President Trump.   Canada is now balking about peacekeepers promised earlier to UN missions.....France and Germany are not happy.    Trump...Trump...Trump.

I have been told that successful "deal-makers"  consider a "good deal"  as being one in which both parties benefit.

These people tend not to make deals with someone whose position is: "me first".

Agreed, but exploiting leverage and advantage position before the deal is struck is also part of deal making.   Canada may consider itself to be on an equal footing with the U.S. for such deals, but clearly it is not.

PM Trudeau explained this well with his plaintive "because it matters so much" [to Canada].

I believe that Canada will have to start to think like Trump, and start to get rid of plenty of in the way of business rules and regulations that hurt businesses. Canada needs to start to think about more freedom, less government, and less taxes. Canada will have to start to think conservatively. There are many programs and agendas that can be cut or abolished. We can survive but we need to think like Trump does if we want to get along with Trump. There can be no other way out. It's join or die.

Does this sound like the old "better to be Red than Dead" resignation of some during the dark 50s and 60s?

Do you ever consider why we evolved INTO all these rules and regulations?

You only have to look back less than 10 years for the most recent example that decimated untold thousands of people.  You want to return to 2008, do you?

And not only banking.....   Acid rain, asbestos, tobacco, automobiles before Nader, labour exploitation,  and on and on.   If business were willing to be ethical and clean up after themselves, .... yes...we would not need regulation. They aren't and don't, and they need to be chased every step of the way.   Regulation of those things is what makes Canada "a nice place to live".

Take them away, and you have just another ugly country of the rich exploiting the poor,   in a long list.

Yes....he curses at them and assaults them in Parliament.    Great teacher.....

An elbow in the tit is certainly worth a grope on the pussy, especially when seen on TV. Perhaps these two guys can find some common ground to get along!

Trump will just force Canada to face a very old fear....fear of being abandoned by another world power and left to fend for itself.   The U.K. abandoned Canada to pursue self interest and survival with the United States (begrudgingly), and Canada had to turn to the U.S as well, even though it didn't want to.

Hate the Americans....love their economy.

Now this guy gets it....the party may be over for Canada's export economy:

And once we start bringing in millions of new immigrants into Canada every year, and they all start up thousands of new jobs, America is going to want to continue to trade with Canada who will be it's biggest trading partner, right eh?  :D I have been told here that immigration is great for Canada. Without it Canada would be bankrupt. I don't know?

Trudeau was a teacher.

He has had experience dealing with unruly children.

Hello?  Trudeau is............ unruly!

Look who's the first PM to be investigated for receiving gifts!  And this comes right after the Liberals are being grilled for pay-for access scandal.

Look how he deliberately answered people in different languages (we call that being rude)!

Look how he literally  elbowed a female MP's breast in Parliament!

Look how he meddled and did a drive-by shoot at Trump during the Primary race......he can't control his loose lips!

Face it.  He should just've stuck to being in Gay Pride parades.  That's what he loves to do, and that's where he seems to excel.

Looks like Team Trudeau is trying to get their game face on before Trump smashes them hard on trade (NAFTA):

Quote

"The White House website, updated since Trump's inauguration Friday, says that if Canada and Mexico refuse to accept a renegotiation of NAFTA that provides a "fair deal" for U.S. workers, then the U.S. will move to withdraw from it entirely."

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-cabinet-calgary-trump-1.3947545

Canadian politicians have often threatened NAFTA over the years....but President Trump is not bluffing.

We will have to wait to see whether re-negotiating NAFTA turns out to be "negotiation" or "extortion".

There is no doubt that the superior resources of the larger country can "slam" Canada.     That why countries have treaties.... agreements specifically crafted so that "slamming" does not happen in either direction.

Else it becomes a road to civil unrest and even war.

I've been saying for years the US is damaged goods and that we should find more stable partners in the world.

Another broken clock thing I guess - if I had a minute for each time I've busted a clock this way I'd have a new clock.

Ratifying CETA will be a very good start.

Canada signals possible U.S. trade deal that excludes Mexico to avoid ‘collateral damage’

In theory Canada has nothing to worry about a re-negotiation of NAFTA aiming to 'protect' American workers. The Canadian working class makes more money/is more expensive than America's. If anything it's in Canada's best interest to have labour protection amendments to the deal, so we don't lose manufacturing jobs to Indiana like we did in the past.

Also "kicking Mexico out" (if it indeed happens) would be a pretty good deal for both the US and Canada tbh.
