I agree. It would only be an extension of existing practice. From what I have read, many people will purchase an SUV because it will better survive a car crash than other cars:

Conversely, I have a neighbor who owns one of those small smart cars. He will not drive on the highway and will not allow anybody in the family to do so.

Yeah, after driving a pickup for work I don't think I'm ever going back to a car.

I can give more simple every day scenarios.

I commute about an hour each way to and from work. Several times a day, lane changes are made with no signal and no shoulder check. Often resulting in two cars merging into the same lane at the same time, only to narrowly avoid each other and each goes back into the lane they came from. Merging from off ramps at 60 KPH when people are doing 100 KPH or more.

Distracted drivers because of phones, eating, smoking, ect.

But still I do not advocate for self driving vehicles. The main problem there is technology that is not secure. It's bad enough when computer systems and such get hacked and vehicles have proven to be hackable in several ways. The more tech that gets put into a car, the more likely this will result in massive incidents. (a cascading scenario I keep talking about) ..

Think of it, you have all this stuff on your PC and phone to protect from viruses/malware. Do you think this is a good trend to go full tilt into automated cars driven by computers?

A sky train full of passengers is heading to the next station. It has a ticking time bomb on board and all the passengers will die if it doesn't get to the next station in time so they can offload. But on the way there, there are innocent people tied to the tracks, in the same number as the sky train passengers. If the train stops, these innocents will be spared but the passengers will die. What should the sky train do?

Here is what would happen if the train is stopped other than stations. That is not a lot of room to evacuate a train full of people. You have a crap scenario either way.
