bush_cheney2004
Protesters raged in Montreal against capitalism, austerity measures, and "privatization" on May Day. Police officers used tear gas and a strong show of force to stem property destruction, smashed windows, and trespassing. Downtown Montreal was plunged into familiar chaos for a few hours on Friday night as several hundred protesters, many wearing masks, clashed with police who fired off tear gas to try to disperse them. Many of the demonstrators said they were bent on destroying capitalism as they engaged in cat-and-mouse tactics with police on May Day, breaking up when forced to and then gathering again in small groups for renewed confrontation. ... "It's our dissent, it's our rebellion, and May 1st is our day," Rich Bonemeal said. "We don't have to ask permission, say please and thank you, or apologize for our presence disrupting the course of capitalist activity. We are in the streets because we want to be disruptive. It's a right you don't ask for, it's a right you have to claim." http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/anti-capitalist-protesters-clash-with-police-in-montreal-1.2353988 Should the Liberal government alter planned austerity measures to meet the concerns of protesters ? Shady
It's time for police to start using harsher methods. This type of thing should never be referred to as "familiar".

Guest
I wonder if it will be a good, state owned, worker run company that will be fixing all those Starbuck's windows.
Ash74
Good. There needs to be people challenging capitalism. You are absolutely right. Every system needs challenged or it cannot not be controlled. Protesting capitalism, governments, for rights. These protests can start change and there are times when change is desperately needed. It's time for police to start using harsher methods. This type of thing should never be referred to as "familiar". I do agree that destroying property is a stupid plan when protesting capitalism when it will be the workers that suffer. Time lost and such. But harsher measures than tear gas and riot police is over kill. These things can be replaced. A human life cannot. What bothers me about this is what magical system do the protesters think will replace capitalism? Governments are just as corrupt. CEO's will be replaced by party hacks that have kissed the right babies than will abuse the power. Montreal is ripe with it as is history. I wish for nobody to be starving in the streets or left for dead in a gutter but how many of us depend on those "nasty corporations" for our pay checks. I dont suppose, based on current events, you could have picked a dumber time to make such a statement.

Ash74
Yet another fat cat statement. You can only insulate from reality for so long. History shows that the protesters start wanting bigger tv's so they shower and go find a job. Usually with a corporation.
Shady
I dont suppose, based on current events, you could have picked a dumber time to make such a statement. Not at all. Something needs to be done if these thugs and vandals are routinely destroying parts of the city.

Shady
Apparently, not many of these poor dispossessed souls. "We're mad as hell, mostly because people just ignore us until we riot". Probably millenials. They want everything for free, and with as little work as possible.
Ash74
Now what history would that be... Usually these riots are young in age. Early twenties and younger. University kids and such. They graduate and go find jobs.

With the thugs and vandals. Now how about legitimate protesters. The headlines are currently full of cops using harsher methods. Got 6 of em serious criminal charges. Is it just a repeat of the Occupy Movement and their manifesto, Montreal style ? They looked pretty stupid protesting while using iPhones and iPads. jacee
People that destroy property and break windows aren't legitimate protestors. The Montreal police need to do a better job protecting people's property. This "riot" was caused by police aggressively enforcing an illegitimate law, trying to disperse every protest immediately, with horses, tear gas, etc.Montreal city council thugs can take the blame and pay the damages. It took police just a few minutes after it started to declare the march illegal because organizers did not give the route beforehand. It's disgusting. .
