jay74
What the F@*$!!!! An International Trade conference and Canada is represented by the F'n Premier of Quebec Jean Charest. Since when does he have the authority to represent ALL Canadians. I have nothing against the guy but, why should he be going and not our PM or Federal Minister. How would Quebec feel if we sent Ralph Klein to represent them. I think I know the answer. First, it is the side deal on health and now PM PM lets Quebec represent Canada at an International conference. Can you say, trying to woo the voters in Quebec. Don't stand for this Canada, let your displeasure be heard and loudly. Tomorrow's headline will be, "PM Martin hands the federal treasury over to Quebec." O, wait........... we already do that. Sorry, my bad. THIS IS BS. Edited October 22, 2004 by Greg
August1991
Indeed, Ralph Klein went off and had a "substantive" chat with the US Vice-President on a matter of international trade between Canada and the US. Are you suggesting it's OK one way but not the other? Or, what exactly is your point?
jay74
Ralph went and met with the VP, not as somebody representing the Canadian gov't but as the Premier of Alberta. It was no bloody International conference on trade. If it was, then I would not agree. The Premier's of our provinces are always meeting with rep's from other foreign govts, for there own provincial interests and that is fine. Why should a premier of one province be the rep of our country at an INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE? If it was Ralph, Gordon, or that Norman Bates look-a-like going instead of Jean, I'd still be bitchin about the same thing. It is just an insult to all the other great provinces of this country and the great people that live there. My point is why should our FEDERAL gov't send a premier to an INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TRADE? Are they too lazy, don't have the time or what.....o, ya, forgot, that $#&*! GG Clarkson has blowin the Feds travel budget for the next 3 years.
Newfie Canadian
Charest has promised not to talk for Canada on the trip, and to limit his discussions to topics under provincial jurisdiction. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...967135_93199167
JWayne625
Charest has promised not to talk for Canada on the trip, and to limit his discussions to topics under provincial jurisdiction. It makes little difference what he promises or doesn't promise to talk about, if it is an International Conference of any kind, our federal Government should be represented by federally elected politicians, not by Premier's, Especially not by the Premier of Quebec, a Province who thinks of themselves as a nation, and who sends separatist's to represent them in Ottawa for the sole purpose of working towards the break-up of Canada. Newfie Canadian
I wasn't arguing with you JWayne, I in fact agree with point about Federal representatives going to international events. I was just pointing out part of the story, and part of it is he said he wouldn't represent Canada and that: ...Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Lucienne Robillard has said the province cannot speak independently about Canadian international affairs. August1991
Ralph went and met with the VP, not as somebody representing the Canadian gov't but as the Premier of Alberta. That's what Charest is doing. It was no bloody International conference on trade. What did Cheney and Klein talk about? Domestic trade? Why should a premier of one province be the rep of our country at an INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE?You mean you have a problem because it's a CONFERENCE? Who cares! How is a conference different from a meeting?Incidentally, I think Klein was alone when he met Cheney. Our Ambassador will be with Charest. IOW, the feds will know what was said. More pertinent, I suspect Klein's meeting was much more substantive than Charest's conference will be. Klein certainly suggested as much. I frankly have no problems with Klein meeting Cheney. I'd say whatever works. But for heaven's sakes, get down off your high horse.
Newfie Canadian
Like I said, I like federal representatives in international meetings, but I can undersand premiers wanting to talk to other countries about things that affect them in particular. Klein and beef, Campbell and lumber, Calvert and wheat are some examples.
