I'm pleased to say that I am glad Calgary is becoming a more progressive city and kicking the ReformCons to the curb. Ron Liepart will be a great CPC representative as he is much more a centrist. If Calgary can acquire common sense then there is hope for Canada. I will predict now that there is no way the CPC will win the next election. However if they were to nominate more centrist moderates like Liepart, they may have a chance. The Reform Alliance movement is dead. Good riddance.

Ya I think that after Mandela died, it came out how he wanted Mandela to remembered as he put it "a terrorist and a communist".

I believe that this was just too much for the conservatives to bear!

Liepert is clearly the better man, this is good news for Canada....

Why on earth would you think this? Granted, Anders was dumb as a back of pucks, but he was essentially harmless. Liepert was minister of finance, energy and health for a government which, despite years and years of a booming economy and huge oil wealth, ran the government into huge deficits. It's no surprise liberals and NDPers got themselve tory cards just so they could vote for this big spending 'progressive' conservative and against the hated Anders.

And Liepert shows his political accumen by snarling at Jason Kenney his first day, before he's even an MP. Reeeaaal smart, that. Kenney is one of the most important people in cabinet and the frontrunner to replace Harper one day. And Harper HATES it when his people use the media to snap at each other. So I imagine Liepert will be given a basement office somewhere with leaky steam pipes on the walls, and told to sit in the back row of the commons, away in the corner, and keep his mouth shut.

Going after golden boy cabinet minister Jason Kenney is not the best way to begin your participation in the Conservative Party. I hope that he maintains his independence and does not become just another back bench Harper policy regurgitating head.

Most likely, from his history, he will continue sniping in public and be bootted from caucus.

Maybe he will cross the floor. I like Liepert from what I've read. He doesn't take shit from anyone. Who the hell is Jason Kenney anyway? I'm going to love watching the CPC implode from the inside. After 2015 we won't see another CPC government in 25 years.

You like him because he's not conservative. The problem in Alberta is that people with political ambition join the consrevatives because no other party has much of a chance of success. But he won't be much of a problem. He's a one term man. They'll boot him, and then another conservative will be elected in that riding.

Actually Kenney should have kept his mouth shut!

It is very odd for an MP or MPP to take sides in an riding association nomination meeting!

The PM also took sides from a link that I read earlier which is very odd???

There could be a revolt brewing in the conservative ranks.

But if there is, their keeping a good lid on it now.

Ya from what I've read, Liepert is no heavens send!

Only shows how crappy the pickens are.

I am told Liepert is actually a bit of a Red Tory, though he keeps these opinions inside of caucus and represents the Party line outside of caucus (as is appropriate for an MLA). As well, he is tough, and well spoken despite a lack of formal education. Anders just strikes me as a clown, sort of Rob Ford light. Harper would do well to put Liepert in cabinet if there is another Tory majority....

Yes, I like him becuse he's not a blue conservative. He has a pile of support in Signal Hill. Look at how he easily took out Anders. It's easy to sell memberships. Anyone can buy a membership. Calgary is quickly becoming a left leaning city and they have one of the most successful mayors in Canadian history, the left leaning Nenshi.

I actually hate the business of 'selling memberships' to bring in non-party people who immediately get to vote in party elections. It leads to a rush of people who are only there to vote for their guy, and then have no further interest in the party. If I had devoted myself to a party riding association for years, and suddenly some new guy comes in and then recruits hundreds of people to make him the candidate I think I'd quit the party.

There ought to be a rule that new members aren't allowed to vote until the election AFTER this one, and then only if they have been participating members of the riding association.

He won't be in cabinet because the Cons will not even win a minority in 2015. I am making that prediction now. I predict a Trudeau majority as he will engage young voters and for the first time in decades young voters will turn out in droves to vote for someone they can relate to, Justin Trudeau.

Are you also against democracy like the CPC?

You mean someone as ignorant and shallow as they are? You might be right.

Young people are all about style, after all, and Trudeau is all about style over substance.

If I remember correctly, the conservative riding association president/executive wanted him gone ASAP!!!!

Looks like they finally got their act together!

Anders was popular within the party because he can raise money!

Don't count this guy out, he's a career politician and there's still lots of nomination meetings left till the next election!

yes, why is a federal riding nomination topic in the Provincial forum? Perhaps MLW member 'socialist' can explain... or alternatively ask for it's proper positioning in the Federal Politics forum.

Yes, I realized a made a mistake MLW member waldo. Sorry to all those whose lives wre interrupted because I placed this thread under provincial politics instead of federal politics where it should rightfully belong. But also, leipert has a strong background in provincial politics. Actually I can see this thread being both a provincial and federal thread.

It's actually not unusual at all for MPs to express support for long serving colleagues. And perhaps, like me, they have doubts about whether this guy is any kind of a conservative at all, and see him as a self-promoter who just longs for power under any banner.
