Conservatives lied about snubbing Marc Garneau

Offices of two Tory ministers closely involved in planning Canadarm event that snubbed Liberal MP Marc Garneau

Documents show at least two ministers offices helped plan a Canadarm event that snubbed Canadas first astronaut, Marc Garneau, now a Liberal MP.

The May 2 unveiling of a Canadarm display at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum featured dozens of VIPs as guests.

But curiously absent from the guest list was Garneau, who had operated the space arm on two space-shuttle flights and was later made president of the Canadian Space Agency. Garneau was miffed at being excluded, blaming the lapse on the highly partisan Conservative government.

Two senior ministers, however, said museum and space agency staff fumbled the ball and that their own ministerial offices played no role.

But internal emails, guest lists and proposals show that the offices of James Moore, Canadian Heritage minister, and Christian Paradis, industry minister, were closely involved in the planning for more than two months.

And media-relations specialists in the prime ministers own department had certified the event as the governments message of the day.

This is just tacky beyond belief!

Snub a Canadian hero because he's the wrong political persuasion, then try to get away with LYING about it to Canadians.

Is Harper THAT pathetically insecure and small minded?

Apparently so!

Can ANYone say they're proud of Harper's gang for this?

What does Harper have to do with this? Anyways, it definitely is petty and small. The individuals involved should be embarassed. However, this is far from any kind of scandal. It's politics.

That being said, I think we throw around the term hero a little too loosely these days.

Complete nonsense. All politicians can be rude and petty.

All politicians are not rude and petty just the a$$holes.

Perhaps you are just prone to following the Conservative Party and so have become desensitized to that fact.

Don't get me wrong I'm a fiscal conservative myself. Libertarian socially, so I'm pretty conservative. I just think maybe my standards are a little Jewish.

Hopefully you can understand why I have some angst on this issue. Especially after the events of WWII.

Hell some people, particularly web trolls, like rude and petty people.

Hell there are people trying to drive people online to suicide, frustration and rage.

You know all them politicos you follow probably could find a second job after they leave politics. The internet is still a thriving marketplace.

Nope, I've seen all kinds of politicians, from all parties act rude and petty. That's no excuse for theses particular individuals. They should be embarrassed that they let their pettiness get in the way of acting professional.

It doesn't say.

Google it.

Marc Garneau is the Canadian astronaut who used the Canadarm in space.

And this:

Garneau said he is partly responsible for the Canadarm being on display at the Ottawa museum, which is why he is even more offended. The iconic piece of equipment was originally going to be kept at the Canadian Space Agency's headquarters near Montreal but when Garneau got wind of that plan he wrote and urged Paradis to consider the public museum in the nation's capital instead.

Can you people not read?

From the link in the OP: "Numerous draft lists of potential VIP guests included at least four former Canadian astronauts: Julie Payette, Roberta Bondar, Steve McLean and Robert Thirsk — with Garneau’s name conspicuously absent."

Draft lists of potential guests. Okay. But how many were invited?

(Pssst! There are no paid researchers here to answer random questions.

The way it works here is if you want to make a point, you google the info you need to make your point and post a link.

You're welcome.)

These are Canada's astronauts:

Canadian space program.

Roberta Bondar (6)Marc Garneau (5)Chris Hadfield (6)Steve MacLean (4)Julie Payette (5)Bob Thirsk (7)Bjarni Tryggvason (5)Dave Williams (6)

What we don't know is their political affiliation, except Liberal MP Marc Garneau. However I'm sure Harper's politicos sleuthed that out - on our time, on our dime - and I think it's safe to say that those not invited are not Conservatives.

So the installation of the Canadarm was not a Canadian event but a Tory photo op ... paid for by Canadian taxpayers.

One thing Harper's good at is figuring out new and tackier ways to spend our money on his political functions.

Well, if there were several draft lists it's possible. How many former astronauts ended up being invited?

Google it.

I notice you're evading the real point here:

When confronted with the fact of snubbing Marc Garneau, Harper's crew said they weren't involved in the planning.

They were.

THEY LIED.

All of them. duh

And even if they were not all invited, it is absurd not to invite Canada's first astronaut and one who has actually used the Canadarm while in space.

It was a pathetic partisan maneuver.

A better question might be, how many live in Ottawa for a chunk of the year?

Real men would have just said. He is political and we don't want to involve partisan individuals, then exclude any card carrying astronaut.

Lying about it is what punks would do, not real men.

I can understand being partisan and petty for political reasons, but lying to the public about something not involving national security is completely not good government, it is corrupt government, and Canadians don't need no crooks.

If they are lying about something as trivial as this, what else are they lying about that is serious.
