I saw American statistics last week indicating that firearms homicides and non-fatal firearms crime are all dramatically lower than they were 20 years ago:

http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2013/05/07/gun-homicide-rate-down-49-since-1993-peak-public-unaware/

...but the majority of people believe that gun crime has actually increased during that span. 56% of people believe gun crime has increased, and only 12% believe it has decreased.

Why are people much more worried about gun crime when there is actually much less gun crime to be worried about?

Maybe the gun grabbers exploit mass killings and gang banging in U.S. media ? Maybe concealed carry proponents want to keep that perception at a high level ? Maybe they visit lots of Canadian web forums and blogs?

In both Canada and the States gun deaths have been declining since the 70s........well gun ownership and the number of guns out there has increased........Like I said about the stat from the FBI citing of all forms of homicides, rifles (including the popular AR-15) make up about 4%......more people are killed a year in the States with hammers and baseball bats then rifles......in Canada, it's knives....

Why the worry? The anti-gun agenda is dogma for those on the left and their friends in the media and they dance on the graves of victims to attempt to further their agenda……..It’s been so for decades…..Yesterday’s Saturday Night Special is today’s “AR-15 military style Assault Rifle”……..Sounds a lot more scarier then small calibre handgun or modern semi-automatic sporting rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge now don’t it?

Of course, if you disagree with them, you’re obviously a militia type or uneducated redneck……….
Funny how the evil NRA is demonized, yet after Sandy Hook, when they proposed lending their training and safety programs, coupled with instructors (free of charge), in addition to affiliated private security firms that specialized in unarmed security methods and training , to any school board across the United States (if they desired so) they were painted as kooks………Yet the Obama administration and many States are going with such proposals absent the NRA of course………
Simply put, the “antis” don’t want the “gun nuts” being part of a “solution” since that might put them in a favourable light and ultimately the “antis” want total disarmament of the public………It makes you wonder what other “great ideas”, devoid or contrary to factual data, they wish to force upon the public……….Their mentality always reminds me of the corny mini series “V” from the 80s…..

What are they hiding? ;)

No “action” can be taken……He has filed fore and obtained a firearms manufacturing license from the US Federal Government, and his plans have the inclusion of one piece of metal in the design so they can’t be considered “undetectable” by X-rays and metal detectors……..Of course someone not abiding by said law could just replace the metal part with a plastic one.

That didn't take long:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2013/05/12/the-liberator-3d-printed-gun-successfully-smuggled-through-international-transport-security/

The Liberator 3D Printed Gun Successfully Smuggled Through International Transport Security

Well, that was fast. It’s not even been a week since the Liberator, the gun made out of plastic and printed on a 3D printer, was first unveiled and test shot. And already someone has downloaded the plans, made a copy of the gun and smuggled it aboard international transport. Entirely by-passing the usual security arrangements.

As they say:

Animated-Genie-Bottle-01.gif

Of course, the UK has banned handguns

A good op-ed piece from Forbes:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrybell/2013/05/14/disarming-realities-as-gun-sales-soar-gun-crimes-plummet/

According to DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. gun-related homicides dropped 39 percent over the course of 18 years, from 18,253 during 1993, to 11,101 in 2011. During the same period, non-fatal firearm crimes decreased even more, a whopping 69 percent. The majority of those declines in both categories occurred during the first 10 years of that time frame. Firearm homicides declined from 1993 to 1999, rose through 2006, and then declined again through 2011. Non-fatal firearm violence declined from 1993 through 2004, then fluctuated in the mid-to-late 2000s.

As I’ve mentioned numerous times in gun-related threads, as has been confirmed by other posters too, Firearm related homicides and non-fatal gun crimes have been declining for decades in the United States and Canada, despite a dramatic increase in gun sales and ownership, of which, the majority of modern gun sales are overwhelmingly made up of semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and pistols.

Is John Lott, the author of “More Guns, Less Crime” right? Does the rapid growth of gun ownership and armed citizens have anything to do with a diminishing gun violence trend? His expansive research concludes that state “shall issue” laws which allow citizens to carry concealed weapons do produce a steady decrease in violent crime. He explains that this is logical because criminals are deterred by the risk of attacking an armed target, so as more citizens arm themselves, danger to the criminals increases.

Well duh.....

Whether or not you buy that reasoning, and it does make sense to me, what about the notion that tougher gun laws have or would make any difference? With the toughest gun laws in the nation, Chicago saw homicides jump to 513 in 2012, a 15% hike in a single year. The city’s murder rate is 15.65 per 100,000 people, compared with 4.5 for the Midwest, and 5.6 for Illinois.

Up to 80 percent of Chicago murders and non-fatal shootings are gang- related, primarily young black and Hispanic men killed by other black and Hispanic men. Would tightening gun laws even more, or “requiring” background checks, change these conditions?

Clearly those that posses an inherent criminal & violent intent will kill one another……It’s a given, but limiting or restricting gun ownership doesn’t work as made evident by Chicago’s homicide rate. The question that should be asked is what can we do as a society to reduce this trend of gang related violence in our Chicago’s, Toronto’s, Oakland’s and Surreys? Clearly laws aimed at the segment of the population not to blame for said violence is a futile and wasted effort.

That's a, excuse the term, natural urge, given that they have psychological issues.

Are you saying gun nuts are suffering from a psychological disorder which makes them crave illegal firearms regardless of laws?

I've never seen any studies on this but it wouldn't surprise me if there were something to this idea.

I saw American statistics last week indicating that firearms homicides and non-fatal firearms crime are all dramatically lower than they were 20 years ago:

Violent crime has fallen significantly over the past 20 years. Most authoritative sources suggest this is due to the drop in the number of young men (young men being particularly violent and stupid).

However, we now have a 24hr newsday that demands news. And if it bleeds it leads has never been more apropos. Video media in particular salivates over bloody violence of any kind, the more outrageous the better. It lovingly details every disturbing, disgusting aspect of such crimes in an almost pornographic way.

So you have all those frightened people hiding behind their triple locked doors clutching their firearms waiting for some black crackhead to come smashing through attacking them. And so you have 5 year olds killing each other with those firearms.

As I've said before, I can accept firearms as a tool. But 80% of people who own firearms never hunt. These guns aren't tools. They're there waiting for the horrific black man to come busting through the door.

And I would say that this is the reason that so many people are under the false impression that gun crime is on the rise in the first place. Gun crime is lower than it has been in decades, and yet people are more worried about it than ever before. What has created this disconnect between reality and perception? Sensationalism.

When I watch American news, I hardly ever see stories about deranged druggies killing people in home invasions. Any news involving guns is almost always about mass killings or school kids settling a score or domestic shootings or accidents involving kids. The only indication I get of the need for self-defense against criminals comes from the NRA, not the media.

And I would say that this is the reason that so many people are under the false impression that gun crime is on the rise in the first place. Mass murders are pretty sensational on their own, don't you think? It wasn't the blanket media coverage of Sandy Hook and Aurora and Arizona and Columbine that made me appalled at the killings. I was appalled the first moments I heard about them.

Blaming the media for outrage against guns or pretty much anything else is a tired old cop-out.

If we are going to shift focus from crime to accidental deaths, then I think that there are a lot of things we should discussing ahead of guns... if people are of the opinion that preventing accidental death is a legitimate policy goal.

Yep...we can start with step ladders and swimming pools.

And the first (known) 3-D gun made in Canada by students at U of T:

http://m.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/u-of-t-teams-diy-handgun-tests-the-potential-of-3-d-printing/article12943852/?service=mobile

It took them 26 hours and files downloaded off the Internet. The result was Canada’s first printed handgun, the tip of a new 3-D printed world where nearly everything can be created in your basement. The technology stands to change the world in both fascinating and frightening ways: just as major innovations such as the Internet have enhanced the way we live, they have rapidly created profound new debates over policy, safety and ethics.

The team at U of T didn’t break any laws. Using the plans for the Liberator, the world’s first 3-D printable handgun that was made in the States, the researchers changed the design of the pistol to make it impossible to fire – although it could have, had they kept the design intact.

That too didn't take long.........I find this interesting though:

More than 10,000 Canadians are now thought to have access to 3-D printers, a number that is expected to explode over the next few years as cheaper and simpler models are unveiled. The office-supply giant Staples recently unveiled a $1,300 printer designed for hobbyists.

Didn't realize 3-D printers were that wide spread in Canada........hmmm
