Topaz Posted February 21, 2013 Report Posted February 21, 2013 Do you think your cost for broadband is to high for what you are getting? There aren't tto many companies that offer it and maybe that why. Since I'm in a small town SW Ontario, my ISP, parent company is out of the US but they do have one here. My Mbps is at 4.74, almost 5 which by the following chart is about average in Canada and my monthly cost is around 45.00. and I have unlimited caps. How does yours compared to the chart? http://www.cbc.ca/news/interactives/broadband/# Quote
Boges Posted February 21, 2013 Report Posted February 21, 2013 $45/month for unlimited is incredible. That Tek Savy? Unlimited caps are only really worthwhile if you're on Netflix and you're downloading everything. Which likely means you don't pay for cable. I personally like the convenience of cable + an HD DVR so I skimp on my internet. I occasionally use Netflix but not enough to justify a huge limit. It's interesting how Broadband has been far surpassed by LTE mobile internet. Eventually that will be the standard. My 4G/LTE phone can get 20+ mbps in areas where LTE is available. Of course mobile internet is exponentially more expensive but I can see that being the future of internet and cable broadband going to way of a dial up modem. Quote
Mighty AC Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 I use TekSavvy at home. I pay $40 per month for 18Mbps with a 300 gig cap. However, using speedtest.net I have never seen it test below 32 mbps. For $55 they offer the same speed with an unlimited cap or for $41 the have an unlimited plan at 6mbps. Anyway, I highly recommend TeckSavvy.I also us a Voip phone service through Voip.ms. I use this adapter (http://www.voipsupply.com/cisco-spa112) which allows me to use my existing wall jacks and phones. I get voice mail, call display, online programmable call groups, call forwarding and despite a very chatty wife my bills are less than $10 per month. I highly recommend managing your own phone service through something like voip.ms. Well down here in the US, I can get unlimited data on my 4G LTE phone for like $100/month and tether it to my computer. And it is fast for downloading. But LTE (and all other cell network types) have horrible latency (ping) compared to cable internet. If you are doing anything that requires fast response times (online gaming, cloud computing, etc), cell networks don't have the performance to enable a smooth experience yet. Quote
RNG Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 I went with a Shaw bundle. I tried very hard to compare the apples to oranges that Shaw and Telus are offering here in BC. It appeared that for the my usage, the combined phone, cable and internet with Shaw was slightly better, and the bundle is better in all my cases than any possible mix and match. The downside is that once the decision is made, it is a pain to change providers. Quote The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.

Anyway, I highly recommend TeckSavvy. The 32 mbps may not reflect what you have. There are burst modes and that could skew the results. I have a 5mbps connection at home and sometimes I can get a 6 or 7 on the speedtest. It's rare though. I pay 45/month and do not have cable. I think my cap is 60GB but I don't download a lot of stuff aside from Steam (installing a game). I rarely if ever use torrents. I would say most of my bandwidth is from youtube. Quote
