America's Cold Civil War: The Politics of Race in 2012

Recommended Posts

If the state-by-state predictions are correct, then with the exception of Indiana the electoral college vote will be split along Confederacy-Union Lines with the states that were not part of the Union, but supported slavery, voting with the Union states.

It's easy to say race is not an issue anymore by pointing to the abolition of slavery, the end of Jim Crow Laws, the Civil Rights movement, etc. However, it's not a coincidence that the states have broken onto these lines following 9/11 and explicitly with the first black president. The majority of blacks and minorities support the Democrats, while the majority of white voters support the Republicans. One need only go back to Clinton to see a Democrat picking up former Confederacy States, Reagan practically swept his elections, and Jimmy Carter's electoral map has plenty of support from the former Confederacy. See the historical maps at http://www.270towin.com for details.

Some might say it's more of a financial issue, with voters supporting the GOP wanting a more fiscally responsible government, but that argument doesn't hold water when scrutinized. The majority of the Confederacy states are broke and collecting more money from the Fed than they put back into it (Mississippi being the case in point).

I heard that leftwing wingnut Andrew Sullivan saying the same thing. It's funny how that if one voted for Obama in '08, you're forced to vote for him again, less you be accused of being racist. It's utter nonsense. Your fixation on race is disgusting.

The top ten states receiving the most federal outlays does not align exclusively with just former Confederate or slavery leaning states. Some were not even states at the time of the Confederacy, and federal spending correlates more with defense programs, Medicare, and population density. Also note that recent U.S. population migration (voters) has favored southern and southwestern states at a net loss from "Union states".

Top ten U.S. states for federal outlays per capita (2011 data):

10....North Dakota

9......Connecticut

8......West Virginia

7......Alabama

6......Kentucky

5......New Mexico

4......Hawaii

3......Maryland

2......Virginia

1......Alaska

Heck, if one supports Obama publicly in '08 and then again in '12, and happens to be black, then he is accused of supporting his own.

Your fixation on race is disgusting.

Yes, those disgusting racists. How dare they!!!

The fixation on race is not his making. It is reality, In no other campaign have there been so many accusations that its President is a foreigner, a Muslim, etc. Are you suggesting race is not a factor? Give me a break. Look at the comments on this forum alone referring to his ethnicity. Virtually every criticism of Obama's economic policies revert to his ethnicity and to deny that is b.s.

I know a lot of people will not vote for him because they do not like his policies, yes but don't have the audacity to say his race has not been made an issue.

I personally believe Romney has contempt for the masses black or white. I do not see him as racist at all. He looks down on people of all colours and ethnicities. He is a product of an American psyche that values peoples' worth by how much money they have.
