Tolerance In Public Schools

Recommended Posts

many people don't realize it but one of the most important objectives of public schools is to make every learner feel safe about who they are without harrassment. i am so proud of an initiative by the TDSB to print stickers and posters for their schools that promote tolerance. this has brought a tear to my eye as i see how far society has come due in large part to the public school system. i'm honoured to be part of the system. thank goodness we don't live where intolerance and hate run rampant. that won't happen in a public school in canada.

What's that supposed to mean? More ignorance?

Once you have children of your own you'll gain a better perspective on what you'd want your child exposed to and at what age. It's up to me as the parent to decide when to discuss alternate lifestyles with my children, it isn't the place of a school.

I raise my own children and don't need the school to do it for me.

The community has a say in how you raise your child.

Quite frankly, a 5 or 6 year old is unlikely to question his/her sexuality because of these posters. They're unlikely to understand what sexuality or sexual orientation is. You put these posters in a kindergarden, you are waisting your time. Messages about not being mean to little Charlie because he has two moms or little Kayla because she's Black, they're more likely to grasp that.

Stop playing games Michael. Just spit it out already. What are you on about?

Well, do you want the school to teach values ?

You said this:

The NDp would let everyone in without screening at all. This is a dangerous policy. I'm not even sure that the NDP even likes Canada never mind love this country. I see the Tories as being very patriotic and proud Canadians

So you clearly believe in some kind of collective idea of 'values'. The thing is - those things are decided by the community and they are taught to your child whether you like it or not.

If you're a religious zealot from another country, you will be taught tolerance in a public school.

The community has a say in how your children are raised. As a parent, you're raising a human being who will have to think on their own and live in the world with the rest of us. You're not raising a clone of yourself or a pet.

So, I have a say in how your child is raised.

and if raised badly the state has the option to remove the child...

i'm all for the state having more control over kids than parents. but how do you determine what is bad in order to get the state to remove those kids and put them into government foster care?

Sex with vegetables now, what next.. they really have gone too far. Does anyone have the actual link, I'd like to read what they are actually saying, but I bet it's gone, I couldn't find it.

TORONTO - An astounding link on the Toronto District School Board website which entices children to experiment sexually with vegetables has a Christian group calling for a criminal investigation.

It has a lot of others vexed, perplexed and scratching their heads. Who is behind the school board’s curtain pulling these curious strings?

In the interest of protecting children, an outraged Dr. Charles McVety, president of Canada Christian College, has written Attorney General John Gerretsen and does not hold back on his animus and disgust.

“The TDSB — through its website — is corrupting Ontario’s children with extraordinary explicit instruction,” wrote McVety in a letter sent Wednesday. “It is the responsibility of the Ontario government to protect our children. According to Section 172 of the Criminal Code of Canada, it is an indictable offence to ‘endanger the morals of the child.’”

Let's see here...

TDSB website:

http://www.tdsb.on.ca/_site/viewitem.asp?siteid=15&menuid=5404&pageid=4720

The following websites contain interesting facts, historical events, people profiles, and other items that may be useful in preparing lessons and planning events for your classroom and school.

Note: The URLs for websites were verified prior to publication. However, given the frequency with which these designations change, teachers should verify them before assigning them for student use.

there's a link on that page to the coalition for positive sexuality

http://www.positive.org/JustSayYes/index.html

and that site contains a web forum:

This is what we're talking about.

Charles McVety needs to get a life. What a creep.

The media is worse though, the way they report his claims without fully exploring them and showing them to be garbage.

Hmm... not seeing the outrage from McVety in the article translating in to what I read on the forum? Is it just me?

No. The TDSB covered themselves with the warning. They're linking to external sites, one of which contains a forum like this. Outrage ? I'm not sure if it's fake or not. If it is, then the person writing this maybe doesn't know the internet so well. If it's not, then they're trying to get a reaction from folks who don't know the internet so well, it seems to me.
