Yet the shows about collecting junk, bartering, auctioning abandoned storage units, and the wheelings and dealings of pawn shops seem to have exploded as of late. Coincidence?

No...reality television producers do not increase the number of pawn shops or storage locker auctions. If you never saw these American shows in Canada, would that mean the businesses were few in number?

It increasing their popularity and bringing them into the mainstream. Potentially leading to more usage throuh more awareness.

Such things as pawn shops, rent-to-own scams, and payday loans have existed for many decades. The growth in storage locker businesses was actually caused in part by easy consumer credit and consumption without room for all the "stuff".

The poor and desperate have always availed themselves of such services regardless of any interpretation(s) from watching American cable television programs.

At any rate, audience interest will wane. We're now down to only one "look how many damn children I have!" programs, and I imagine the Decadent Feuding Housewives franchise has reached the point of diminishing returns, too, economically speaking.

Hence why we have the new Dallas reboot. Welcome back JR!!!

Of course...the Americans must be wary of losing that valuable Canadian audience. This particular service is available in Canada!

That is only because you insist on looking at trends within the bounds of imaginary lines on a map. Globally wealth disparity has decreased as developing countries become richer.

Yet the income gap is growing within some OECD nations. Funny that. A rising tide lfits all ships, sure. Except that it lifts some ships a hell of a lot higher than others, such that the ships grow further apart as they rise.

And, it's about a lot more than having some minimal material goods so you're not poor by some absolute standard. If the spread widens between those that have little, and those that have the most, it tears society apart. Causes health problems and crime, and disrupts social cohesion. Of course we have to have income disparity, society would fall apart just as much if we enforced true income equality. But it's a matter of getting the disparity right - it's a Goldilocks thing.

Why does an income gap matter? Does it matter if a CEO makes 30 million dollars and an employee makes 50,000 dollars? It doesn't matter as long as e boats all rise. As august always says we are far richer than we were 30 years ago. We can buy powerful computers for less than a VCR when they were first invented. We have unprecedented access to information, and the technology in our vehicles and machinery is mind blowing, and we're poorer?

Here's some food for thought rich people don't cause inflation, it takes a large proportion of people with newfound money to do that. Ever wonder why there's backlash on minimum wage increases? It's because over time with their "wage" increase they will be poorer because the price of goods they buy goes up as well.

In aggregate the ships are coming closer together. What you are doing is focusing on a subset of the ships that are rising much slower than the rest and that is giving you a distorted picture.

That said, I can understand why you care more about those people that live inside the imaginary lines. The trouble is your presumption that something can be done about it. Nothing can be done. This redistribution of wealth is an inevitable consequence of a more equitable global economy. It sucks for those of us that have enjoyed a privileged existence living in developed countries.

Ah, so if we were to lower the min wage, they would actually be better off? Funny how it only seems to work on minimum wage workers. CEO's going for bigger and bigger incomes, not a problem. Doctors wanting more, no sweat. McD's worker wanting a bit more - it will ruin the economy. Who knew they had so much economic clout.

First - doctor's ARE seeing demands that their wages be reduced as provinces come to terms with health care costs. Second - it is a numbers game. The Royal Bank has 80,100 employees. A CEO making zero instead of 10 million would leave a whopping $125/year (about 6 cents/hour) in pay raises for those 80,000 employees. So yes, minimum wage employees making an extra dollar per hour will have more of an effect on the economy than CEOs making millions.

What could the government do with an extra $10 million?

But you're only looking at the CEOs. What about all the other people making somewhere between what the CEO and the min wage worker makes? Why is it always the min wage or low wage workers that will destroy the economy with higher wages, not the better paid workers. I've heard that argument so often, that inflation will just eat up win wage workers increases, by people I guarantee you will take any wage increase they can get for themselves.

And here's a thought. Min wage workers will immediately spend that extra money because they live hand to mouth - ie it gets put back into the economy. They will be healthier because they can afford better food and housing and medical care (it's not all free). They will make less demands on our social support systems and pay more in taxes to the govt. Sounds like a good deal all around to me.

Every other worker in a company is facing downward pressure on their wages and benefits. The minimum wage only gets in the news because it is a government mandate.

In any case, minimum wage laws are known job killers. A person without a job is more of a burden than a person with a job.

Then do it and see what happens to the flow of capital, which doesn't exist just to enable better "social support systems". Some people have forgotten what it means to be poor, including "minimum wage workers".

Even less than those employees could do with that extra $125.

You're a complete joke. Remind me to ignore you in the future.

You would be the first person jumping on the government for squandering $10 million in taxpayers money. You would whine about even less. Then when I ask you what the government could do with that money, you say next to nothing.

I should know better than to discuss anything with you.
