It cost taxpayers more than $2.3 million to investigate the Conservatives fraudulent activities. Since this investigation resulted in a guilty plea, should the Conservative Party of Canada be required to pay back the Canadian taxpayers the cost of investigating their criminal activities?

Between May 2007 and last fall when the Conservative Party pleaded guilty to Elections Act charges, Elections Canada and the director of public prosecutions spent far more for lawyers, forensic accountants and investigators than the $52,000 the party paid in fines for violating its spending limits in the 2006 campaign.

Yes and they should also be subject to mandatory sentencing.

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

Tax money used for oversight of government is a wise investment, and is the last thing that should be complained about. You guys are pathetic.

Perhaps you'll find some fraud someday, instead of the litany of manufactured impropriety over the last several months.

Oh it is money well spent. When the government is found guilty, their party should also be required to pay the taxpayers back for their fraudulent activities. Instead they got a slap on the wrist with a completely meaningless $52,000 fine. The benefit far outweighed that cost. We have a government now that is guilty of fraud and they will continue to act like criminals because it benefits them:

The Tories dismissed the matter as difference of opinion over accounting — the same language they are now using to rebut opposition outrage over the undisclosed costs of purchasing F-35 fighter jets.

So when will the Liberal Party pay back the millions they stole from the taxpayers?

Why don't you email them and ask?

I know you're probably used to seeing investigations solved in 60 mins on television, but they take a bit longer than that in real life.

Especially when the costs of EC investigators' offices, computers, printer paper, shoes, overtime, telephones, etc., are factored in.

A waste of time cause Bob Rae's reply would be "not our problem, that was under a previous Liberal administration". We'll just keep raising it and as long as the party doesn't cough up, it will remain a cloud over the party.

Well, you better find something soon, or else it's you guys that should be paying back the $2.3 million tax dollars you'll have completely flushed down the toilet. :)

Frivolous investigations are as bad as friolous lawsuits.

Assuming guilt was actually pleaded, would you ask the same question about an individual who pleads or is found guilty? Should they (somehow) pay for the entire trial?

Yet, you drew your conclusion in a matter of minutes.

Exactly. I'd listen a little more to what people of their ilk had to say, if they hadn't cried wolf every single day since Harper became PM in 2006. They've lost all credibility.
