Leger has put out a new poll showing the NDP at 36% ahead of the Tories at 35%

This will be a historic moment for NDP supporters and quickly forgotten by everyone else.

What happened to "come talk to me when the NDP are leading" jez move the goal posts much.

Its a statistical tie.. and the NDP have been in this range in the two previous polls...

What happened to our regular polling thread?

Its stupid to have a new thread title for each poll released...

Agree someone should dig that one up again.

I don't mind a government headed by Mulcaire, I actually like him and like some of his ideas. He will do much to move the NDP closer to the centre and squeeze out the Liberals. I hate the Liberals and want to see them dead. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I dislike the antisemitic parts of the NDP. The far left people like Libby Davies who attack Israel and support the Arabs at every turn. The issue isn't as clear cut as she and many on both sides of the political spectrum, makes it out to be. The Palestine question is too complicated to be answered by a simple yes or no. We need a lot more honest discussion on the topic. Their are far too many over simplified generalizations flying around by everyone to really do much good.

punked can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the official position of the NDP is that Israel is a sovereign state and has every right to defend itself from aggressors both foreign and domestic. What they do not have the right to do is be the aggressor themselves. In those cases, Israel ought to be criticized for their policies.

I don't think many in Canada fully understand the situation in Palestine and only get their info from news clips and sound bites from certain party friendly sources. This is the reason we need more discussion and less finger wagging which helps no one.

I agree with you, but that applies to both sides of the discussion. Both Israel and Palestine have been aggressors in the past. It seems like people look at the situation there like it's a team sport where you root for one side or the other. That's not going to solve anything.

Ok, so you hate the Liberals, can you explain why? Even though I don`t think Harper makes a very good PM, and everyday, the PM is proving that, I don`t hate him and want him dead, so what`s the problem with the Liberals?

Topaz it's a figure of speech. I want the party dead not the people in it...lol. Come on, give me a break. It's Saturday morning can we please be nice?

That is right, and they need to respect the what the UNs had ruled are their boarders that seems to be a big part of what the NDP believes about Israel. Although all of that is moot really because the NDP is more isolationist then the other two parties believing that while they can talk and exert political pressures on other countries through the UN and so on we should not be sending our people off to fight wars to solve the problems of other countries. That is not our place. You wont have a Micheal "lets drop troops in Israel and impose a two state solution on these people" Ignatieff leading the NDP. That is more of a Liberal and Conservative thing. Canada can't solve the worlds problems, it can help and be a player but most of these conflicts need to be solved by the people of those nations themselves.

I understood what you meant...

I think the Liberal party will probably die of it's own irrelevency more than what any other party could do to it...

That irrelevency is of its own making,by the way...

To ask that question you have to be a lieberal---- so that`s the problem with the Liberals.

I made a whole thread :P The NDP being tied is not threadworthy, the NDP being in first is.

I'm a political junkie. I'll remember this moment. If the NDP drops to 3rd next election and stays there, I'll remember this moment for the rest of my life. "Hey remember that time the NDP was in first?"

However most Canadians wont care.

Ill agree to that but I think this generation of NDP is ready for the hard work it takes to form government.

The NDP has always been willing to work hard to win. The problem is that until now they've not been willing to compromise to do so. Once Harper and the Conservatives proved that they were willing to do so, when needed, and stand their ground when they could get away with it, they won. If the NDP can do they same, they will win as well.

All the NDP has had is compromise for all these years. I'll just name a few things they have gotten out of those compromises though Medicare, Social Security, and OAS.

The NDP has always refused to compromise. Sure there have been one-offs like the one that created medicare, but in general, the NDP refuses to compromise. Federal of course. Look at what happened when they wanted to remove the word Socialist from the preamble. It was not until 2004 that Layton forced the NDP to stop it's instance that Canada withdraw from NATO.

That is an inter party fight not a refusal to compromise. Layton didn't force the NDP to do anything because as I have pointed out a million times the leader is held to the policies the NDP members decide, the NDP members decided something so it became policy. Welcome democracy see you on the other side maybe.

"Will not compromise core principles" = "Will not compromise"

Like it or not.

If NDP members force unwinnible policies upon the NDP, then they have no right to complain that the party can not win an election.

I look at the "fears" that Mulcair would turn the NDP into a "Blairite" party, whereas I look at Blair's electoral success record and laugh at those NDPers who feared this.

I have no clue what you are talking about. The NDP have been in charge in provinces and have compromised all the time. They aren't an unknown quantity like you seem to suggest. As for the NDP and New Labor lets just pry Mulcair wins like Blair and then does not govern like that man did.

I hope the NDP never make decisions based on polls, and continue to make decisions on whats the right thing to do.

Excellent example of what I'm talking about.

If you want to vote for a party that makes their policy based on opinion polls then the Liberals are the party for you. The NDP have always been a party to debate policy convince each other of the best policy then take that policy out to the public and try to convince them it is the right one. Remember "Taliban Jack" it was the right policy when he came out with it 3 years before our own government accepted it. It is called good governance.

Ethics and Honesty does not win you elections. Look at Harper's 2004 campaign. It focused on ethics. Look at the results. 99 seats. Look at Harper's 2012 campaign. He knowingly lied about the jets. Look at the results. 166 seats.

Ethical and Honest politicians and parties very rarely win; and when they do, they quite often become pragmatic and do what's needed and not what's ideological. Compare the federal platform to provincial platforms. Provincial parties that have won are either

A - Liberal

or

B - Unethical
