Josh Fox, director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Gasland" was taken into custody by Capitol Hill police this morning, along with his crew, after Republicans objected to their presence, according to Democratic sources present at the hearing.

What do the Republicans have to hide and why do they hate the First Amendment?

a bit of background... those same Republicans, with Dick Cheney in the lead, relied on a bogus, manipulated and industry influenced 2004 EPA report to include provisions within the Bush admin 2005 Energy Policy Act; provisions that prohibited the EPA from regulating fracking under the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act. Regulation that exists, if any, is solely under the jurisdiction of individual U.S. States. Subsequent to the release of that flawed 2004 EPA report, an EPA whistleblower came forward claiming the study’s findings were unsupportable and that evidence had been suppressed showing that fracking fluid toxic chemicals could migrate into ground water.

of course, the lack of regulation spurned on the industry into a rapid escalation of gas/oil fracking. The only positive outcome of that escalation is that enough problems surfaced to force the U.S. Congress' hand (in 2010), to again ask the EPA for another review/study of fracking's impact on water quality and the environment... the new EPA report is anticipated mid-2012.

Don't be silly. The Republicans don't 'hate' the first amendment.

They're just not very fond of it. And more importantly, how much is the first amendment going to pay them? Hmm? Not nearly as much as the oil and gas industry, I'm betting.

Fox wasn't arrested for breaking the rules. He was arrested because the oil and gas industry don't like his documentaries. And the Republicans on that committee are bought and paid for. They might as well have SOLD stamped on their foreheads in bright red letters.

Fox was arrested for unlawful entry....why didn't he get credentials?

This isn't the first time Fox has been arrested in Washington, D.C.: in September, the filmmaker -- who's working on a sequel to his Oscar-nominated documentary -- was arrested at the White House while protesting the mining of Canada's tar sands.

It is funny how James O'Keefe is able to break wire tapping laws, AND commit voter fraud and still not be put in prison but you speak out about big business and they got a cell waiting for you.

Because they wouldn't give him credentials. And why do you need credentials when the hearing is open to the public, and on camera anyway? Anyone can walk in, as I've read, and take pictures with a camera phone too as long as they're not disruptive. In addition, again, so I've read, no other committee has ever ordered someone out for not being properly accredited, much less arrested them. So why not? What is it the employees of the gas industry - ie, the Republicans - are trying to hide?

Nope...he needed a press credential, and refused requests by Capitol Police to shut down the camera.

Try it yourself...drive to D.C. with a big honking camera and crew and try to just walk in to a committee session.

According to what I've read that happens frequently, and no one can remember a camera crew ever being arrested or even ordered out of the room unless they were disturbing the hearing in some way.

Memories don't count...laws do. Took 20 seconds to google up this from almost 20 years ago:
