Our Communist Health Care System

Recommended Posts

The unfortunate fact most Canadians seem entirely ignorant about is that Canada's health care system was designed in Cuba. Pierre Trudeau, like a lot of leftists, was fascinated by Fidel Castro, and considered him a visionary. Together with Ed Broadbent they put in place the same health care system as Catro had.

Think about it. The aim of our health care system is that all people, no matter how rich, how important, should get precisely equal treatment in all cases. Is that not the heart and soul of Communism? The theory is that

you'll have the rich banker waiting in line behind the mill worker, who's in line behind the wealthy industrialist, standing behind the store clerk.

Communism.

And just as unrealistic and impractical and impossible as everything else the Communists ever came up with.

In reality the rich banker and wealthy industrialist either know important people who can bump them to the head of the line, or they simply take a quick trip across the border and get their needs seen to at once. You won't find any rich people waiting months for diagnostic machines or specialists or treatment. That included Jean Chretien, of course, who went to the US to get some treatment. And it includes Paul Martin, as well.

But Communism doesn't require honesty. In fact, it requires dishonesty. Here too, the Liberals excel.

The Conservatives seem to believe in better health care, no matter what kind of system accomplishes this. The Liberals and NDP believe in the system, the marvelous, perfect, holy, unchangeable system, which "guarantees" equality of health services to all. They will defend the system, no matter how obvious its failings.

Five years from now I predict we will be spending billions and billions more on health care, but will have the same long waits for service. The Liberals and NDP will brag about how much more money they have put into health care - because to them that indicates they "care" and that's all that really matters. Practical results? Well, they're secondary at best.

Decades after Trudeau, Canada is still the only nation on the planet, other than the North Koreans, who have decided to impliment Fidel Castro's system of rigid Communist control of health care. Anyone ever wonder why?

I don't pretend to have the healthcare answers, but no liberal gov. is going to solve it,wake up people, they created it.Their priorities still do not include improving the health care system, except in the case of Ontario, where Dilton will fix the problem by charging the working middle class more money once again. The liberal solution to everything is to raise taxes ,but seldom that cures the problem.

One could only wish it was that controlled and rigid. You think it is bad because Castro implemented healthcare in Cuba. Geeesh, what will he do next? Feed the poor. What a monster eh. Don't be ridiculous and brainwashed by the American mindset. The majority of Cubans are quite happy with Castro. They are the most efficient organic gardeners in the world. Since the American embargo; they have had to come up with methods to feed the people.

You are the one not thinking Bro. What is wrong with Government funded health care. Just because Cuba has it you believe that it must therefore be wrong.

Lack of free thought there.

Not all democracies are great; not all communist countries are downtrodden and corrupt. At least no more so than many democracies.

What is wrong with private healthcare?

Because it costs more and can be above the means of some. Compassion for your fellow man is too much to ask of you. You are a real sweetie

How does it cost more? The government doesn't fund the healthcare system with money that they grow on trees.......

WRT "Compassion for your fellow man", who's going to show compassion to all Canadians, when our current healthcare system bankrupts us all? ie. who's going to pay for it? With that said, I don't mind having a "safety-net" for the "poor", but the majority of Canadians are not "poor" (yet).

Why do companies expand or merge. One central system instead of many that duplicates services. That is another reason why I would like to see the Federal government to control healthcare.

Our current health care system is quite sustainable. It is mostly a little game played by the provinces to pry more money from the federal government with a majority of the citizens support. At least Health care is something we all may have need of. Better our tax money go to that then bailing out companies; sending money to countries all over the world where most of the money sent to help the people is ripped off by unscrupulous government officials. Better health care for all than some ultra expensive transit system for a small portion of the citizens but paid for by all.

If a poor country like Cuba can fund national health care then a rich country such as Canada should be able to also. What could be more important than health care that is available to all citizens.

Before national healthcare only the rich and welfare recipients could afford doctor bills when they had a major health problem. We had MSA but if you were employed by a cheapskate employer you didn't get it; if you were between jobs or starting a new job; you weren't covered.

Argus :

When you are driven to launch criticism of the Canadian system of Universal Health Care, or, asking readers to consider other important issues for that matter, you must be within range of a known possibilty or probability. In truth, your scenario is as far out as a lighthouse.

But I give you an A+ for entertainment value.

Yes, they probably are. 141,000 Cubans who were not happy with Castro were all shot. If I was Cuban, after that I'd quickly plaster a stupid grin on my face and wax on about the greatness of Castro. I have no wish to die for a madman's ego.

not all communist countries are downtrodden and corrupt.

Name one.

Saskatchewan had a form of socialized medicine in the late 1940s, when Castro still dreamed of a major league baseball career.
Why do companies expand or merge. One central system instead of many that duplicates services. That is another reason why I would like to see the Federal government to control healthcare.
This is one of the dumbest reasons for State monopolies I have ever heard.
Oh the DRAMA!
TalkNumb gets it (succinctly) right again.
Sanctions have made life difficult in Cuba not Castro.
Huh? Did sanctions make the Soviet Union a basket case?
Compassion for your fellow man is too much to ask of you.
The biggest lie of all: the private sector/right wing/free market lacks compassion for fellow human beings whereas the State/leftwing/socialism is concerned about humanity.

Can someone please make the logical steps from profit maximization to harming humanity? IOW, can someone please prove to me that profit maximization is bad for humanity?

It is impossible to discuss health care without discussing insurance. We do not buy health care the way we buy groceries. We buy health care the way we buy car repair services after a major accident.

Insurance schemes often work best when there is group, compulsory coverage.

An intelligent argument can be made for State supplied health insurance. I would at most call this "pragmatic communism." Deng Hsiao-Ping famously said "Who cares whether the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice."

What is wrong with Government funded health care. Just because Cuba has it you believe that it must therefore be wrong.

Before Castro, Cuba had 1 physician per 960 patients and ranked 10th on the WHO's list of world's medical systems. It had Latin America's lowest infant mortality rate. Not any more. Cuba now ranks lowest, or near lowest, in Latin American countries.

The Washington Post condemned Cuba's dirty and unlit hospitals, reporting that in 1995, contaminated water supplies in Cuban hospitals caused 60 deaths and 289 serious infections.

Cuba is now a major "exporter" of healthcare. It's an industry with an annual growth rate of 20%. Tourists report being asked by Cubans to refill their prescriptions for them, as tourists are given medical care unavailable to native Cubans. Entire hospitals are built exclusively for the use of foreigners and Communist Party officials under the auspices of "health tourism" agenices such as MEDICUBA and SERVIMED. Cuban exiles have called this system a "medical apartheid."

Castro has made his priorities clear after the collapse of the USSR and the consequent end to his $5bn per year payoff. He cut social programmes, such as healthcare, and increased the military budget.

Since the American embargo; they have had to come up with methods to feed the people.

Cuba trades with every country except the USA and Israel, so are you seriously telling me that the USA has all of the world's money and goods?

Furthermore, since the Cuban Democracy Act, the US government has given $150m in humanitarian aid to Cuba. That's more than all the other countries in the world put together.

You right wing money grubbing conservatives like to criticize the public health care system but offer no proof

that private health care would offer anything better. Of course if the working poor or lower middle income cannot afford healthcare I supposed that would take them off the waiting list, Is that what you are advocating.

We all pay taxes; rich and poor. If not income taxes; we pay pst, gst, gas tax, etc.

I don't need a better highway to a ski hill; nor a n expensive transportation system to the airport. We all need a p[roperly working health care system.

Cuba's health care has deteriorated due to the embargo by the USA prevents them from get some medicines and hurts their trade.

American embargoes specifically exclude medicines and medical supplies. And as I already said, they contribute more in humanitarian aid than the rest of the world combined.

If Castro is rebuilding his military; it may well be because of thinly veiled threats from BUSH.

Either that, or he wants to arrest and shoot/torture more dissidents. Given his track record I think the latter more likely.

You right wing money grubbing conservatives like to criticize the public health care system but offer no proof

You can ask Sweden or Great Britain, who have been privatising elements of their healthcare and introducing two-tier care and finding that healthcare provision has become better across the board. On the other hand, waiting lists (for instance) in Canada have risen year on year.

Modifications to Canada's healthcare system don't necessarily have to be along US lines. There are many systems out there, and almost all provide better service than what we have. But, for some reason, Canadians have blinders on to all of it.

Now, do you have any proof for anything you've said? Or is this just more Michael-Moore-style emotional, factually void hand-wringing?

Hugo!

See my reply under the Healthcare thread - where it properly belongs - to the fanciful notions about the degrees of privatision, Particularly as it refers to the wrong ideas about Britain and Sweden
