caesar
BC's top cop isn't worried that drug charges against a Ministerial assistant will give his government another black eye. 32-year old Marshall Smith was picked up on Canada Day by police in Victoria who say they found him with cash, scales, and several ounces of crystal meth. Solicitor General Rich Coleman doesn't think the public should perceive this as another scandal though. He tells News1130, the drug trade affects everyone, and this wouldn't even be a news story if there wasn't a government connection. He says there isn't a community in the province that's insulated from drugs, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that this could happen to someone who's in the employ of the government. Smith was on medical leave before he was arrested, and Coleman admits the government was aware he was struggling with substance abuse. Coleman says the problems are recent though -- and background checks are done on all employees during the hiring
caesar
Excuses, this is the most corrupt scandal ridden BC Government yet. We haven't even been given the facts on the first two aides charged and the raid on the legislature. Then there is Doug Walls. Who is doing the checks on these people? They should all be fired. maplesyrup
So Coleman sluffs it off, eh? Don't worry, it will disappear from the news shortly. Big business protects their own. Contrast the coverage Glen Clark received for his indescretions compared to the coverage Campbell received for his DUI. Big business Campbell front got a couple of days on the front pages, and then the story got buried, whereas Clark, apart from the TV crews filming the police raid on his home live, was in the news for months. Turned out that Clark was innocent by-the-way, but I bet most people don't even know that. Two sets of rules in society - one for the friends of big business, and another one for the rest of us.
maplesyrup
Oh yea, I almost forgot. They sure didn't forget to charge Svend Robinson with the ensuing negative publicity, during the last week of the election campaign. Coincidence in timing, my ass. But when it comes to big business fronts BC Premier Gordon Campbell's, and PM Paul Martin's people in relation to the raids on the BC Legislature on December 28, 2003, nary a word. And you thought we were all treated equally in Canada, eh? Don't make me laugh!
Cartman
Maples, you forgot to mention that Campbell lied about the circumstances of his DUI afterwards BIG TIME. He said it was the only time, as far as he knew, that he has ever drove drunk. Incredibly bad luck that the only time he ever did such a thing he got caught. What are the odds? The amount he said he consumed also did not come close to the levels indicated by the police. How does BC continue to suffer from such corrupt politicians? It is truly incredible. The Svend issue...teribbly sad that a well respected, well spoken social crusader ended his career like that. Must be something environmental about the Lower Mainland. takeanumber
Well: alright: Let's get the facts clear. When Svend steals, he turns himself in publicly, hiding nothing. When the Cambell government or Liberal government of Canada steals, they cover up and interfere in police investigations. The act of committing a crime is bad. The act of covering it up using political power is worse, IMO. The problem with most of these politicians is dishonesty, which leads to cover ups, which is what really annoys Canadians the most. Sully
When Svend steals, he turns himself in publicly, hiding nothing. Hahahaha hiding nothing eh, hmmm did he mention the week prior he was looking for a ring, NO. Did he mention all about the survelliance cameras that were all throughout the auction house no. Did he blame his "irrational" actions on a fall he sustained two years prior during a hike. If thats the case why did he not relieve himself of his MP position well in advance of the incident if he was suffering so bad. I mean none of us want an unstable MP do we? There is the one group who is sympathetic towards Svend and there is the rest of who know he is full of S!@t. At least Campbell held an interview where he took questions from the press who nailed him to the wall, oh I remember Svend putting on a little staged press conference with tears, hahahah what a joke, no questions taken by Svend. caesar
Campbell tried the tear bit and lies about how much he drank and that it had never happened before. He, cost the taxpayers lots of extra money as he suddenly needed a 3 or 4 man police escort to drive him everywhere. Hmm I wonder if he still needs them now that he has his driver's license returned. Don't forget the one ministerial aide that was suspended after the raid on the legislature whom we are still paying. Where are our answers to that disgrace. At least, the other one, we are not still paying. How about the Doug Walls fiasco. Millions of dollars wasted there on a man already under question for hanky panky in a car dealership. Cousin of Mrs. Campbell. stinks.l
takeanumber
I think Campbell has far more to hide than he's letting on.
