maplesyrup Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Harper on defensive Stephen Harper entered the final week of the federal election campaign on the defensive, denying reports that a Conservative government would scrap the requirement for Air Canada to operate in both official languages. /It was the second time in less than a week that Harper was forced to answer to an agenda driven by his opponents, after a finely tuned campaign in which Harper was mostly on the attack. On Friday, Harper was faced with demand for apologies from both Prime Minister Paul Martin and NDP Leader Jack Layton after his office sent out news releases suggesting the two support child pornography. The combination of the Harper Conservative ideas, including scraping the Kyoto Accord which addresses global warming, with the secret agenda of Ralph Klein on medicare, must be concerning more and more Canadians as we enter the last week of the election campaign. Michael Hardner Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 Maybe the Bloc will support Martin after all, if he promises to leave Air Canada in Montreal. Of course, this might lose Martin some votes in ... the west ? Uh.... Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
maplesyrup Posted June 21, 2004 Author Report Posted June 21, 2004 The New Democrats and the Conservatives are tied at 9% each for support in Quebec according to the latest EKOS poll released yesterday. So Harper's plan to move Air Canada to Toronto, and scrap or minimize French is an attempt to divide and conquer. It is obvious Harper has written off Quebec and is trying to shore up support in ROC. Looks like politics of devisiveness, play one region against another. How sad. Quote An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. maplesyrup Posted June 21, 2004 Author Report Posted June 21, 2004 Conservatives open hornet's nest on official bilingualism in air industry Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's logic may be headed for a crash landing over the issue of bilingualism in the airline industry, analysts said. As the federal election campaign heads into its final and decisive week, Harper was fending off loud criticisms Sunday over his plan to wipe out the law that requires Air Canada to offer bilingual service and keep its headquarters in Montreal. Liberals in particular crowed that this step proved Harper had a hidden agenda to gut official bilingualism in Canada. Shall we call it Air Canada Turbulence? Looks like politics of devisiveness, play one region against another. How sad. Why don't you try to give me a justification for this law? Oh, I forgot, you're NDP. You think the government should be able to tell everyone how to do everything. Air Canada is a private company now. Where does the government get off making them follow their absurd bilingualism laws and keep their head office in Montreal? This law is just another sop to Quebec. Given the company is teetering on the verge of destruction I'd think removing a law with ridiculous, expensive requirements would be approved by most Canadians.
