Halton Catholic District School Board. If it was a public school they would tell me to fly a kite basically, I'm guessing.

You're probably right.

I went to a Catholic elementary school and high school. So, I'm still wondering about these things:

what was the particular incident(s) that lead you to meet with the principal? I'm curious not only about what Catholic values the teacher was contradicting, but how (s)he was contradicting them.

It's been a long time since I've had kids in school, but when they were I used to say that you had to inoculate them against the school system. At that time it wasn't anything to do with teaching about acceptable alternate lifestyles, or Jane has two mommies etc., it was to do with not allowing a child to excel or achieve a higher standing, it was about political correctness and lowering standards to accommodate other groups, I felt they always taught to the lowest common denominator.

I tend to agree that many of the classes and teachings have a liberal bent, during the Harris years teachers did tend to teach socialist politics with anti-conservative views (when they weren't on strike that is) and likely still do. No time for all of it, but I did complain to the high school about the one sided political bent LOL Teachers should keep their personal political opinions to themselves and when teaching about politics etc. they should give both sides of the issue, not promote one side or the other.

There was a case in Aurora, of a 16 yr. old High School boy, who complained that he didn't want to hear what he called, his teacher's left-wing political rants. ... there was an investigation but the links I had no longer work.

I wonder if that was before or after Harris used taxpayer money to run anti-union messages on TV.

It's still not right for teachers to politicize the classroom, but Harris - being a bad person - brought out the worst in everybody.

Oh right - I forgot - he was a 'bad person' for standing up to a huge union which was holding our kids hostage.

They are still politicizing the classrooms.

teachers going nuts and threatening students to get their own way. Classy lot.

What is news is the violent reaction of Ontario’s teacher unions to the reports that Harris, a former teacher, would be receiving an award. No one, not even this humble scribe, can drive the unions crazy faster than Mike Harris.

And it would appear they have gone completely nuts this time.

Not only have the unions voiced their opposition to the award, they have gone the extra mile and threatened to bar student teachers from Nipissing if Harris is honoured. Talk about blackmail.

Who do these people think they are? To start with teacher unions are accountable for the collective bargaining of teachers in Ontario. They have no responsibility for Nipissing University. The Board of Governors at Nipissing are capable of determining whom they would like to honour with a degree.

And what do the unions have against the students of Nipissing? Last time I checked, the Schulich School of Education at Nipissing had a reputation for graduating great teachers. But the unions have threatened to deny students the opportunity to complete the teaching credits they need to earn their degrees.

This is all in character for the thugs who run the teacher unions in Ontario. They have never hesitated to threaten students to get their own way. Classy lot.

And that’s why Mike Harris drives the union bosses crazy; they can’t push him around.

Intresting, isn't it, that Mr. Falange has a problem with the so-called "indoctrination" by teachers when, on the same day, and in another thread, he calls for an authoritarian regime to ahem give role models to our children. No to indoctrination, yes to forced adoption of a political ideology.

Well, at least the op ed was done by an unbiased source, fairness and balance and all that.

I enjoyed the letter below though!

Mr. Snoblen - I can't believe that you are still in denial about how destructive you and your master Mike Harris were for education in Ontario. I was there in Kingston at Queen's University Faculty of Education when you as our "guest speaker" told an auditorium of bright eyed and hopeful new teachers that "the world doesn't owe you a job". I was also there when that same audience booed your inflammatory and insulting remarks and you cut the meeting short and ran like a coward out of the building. "crisis in education" - The voters showed you fools how they felt about you. I can't believe that the Toronto Sun is so desperate for columnists that they have hired you.

I sense some animosity towards school teachers.

No animosity, just get (or did get) annoyed at their bias in the classroom, I did feel animosity towards the unions for striking so often and using the kids as hostages. They didn't seem to care about the kids at all, in fact the thuggery re: Nippissing when the union suggested they might retaliate by denying job placements to Nipissing students is an example of attacking students for political purposes.

I was also upset at the dumbing down of the system, where the principal of our school saw fit to do away with awards of excellence and competition because all are equal doncha know. No more special ed classes for those students who excelled and needed more stimulation, not fair to the others doncha know. Both my boy lost out on that one, they were enjoying the additional stimulation offered.

If I could have afforded it I would have sent my kids to private school, I know the voucher system isn't popular, but under a voucher system I can see schools of excellence springing up, one size doesn't fit all in the school system. So - we suffer through a dumbing down caused by the triumvirate of Unions, School Boards and Teachers too self interested to buck the system, allowing teachers to push a left wing socialist engineered agenda, at least in Toronto. The Toronto school board was well known for it's leanings - and still is by the look of it. http://www.insidetoronto.com/community/education/article/911857--downtown-left-wing-to-lead-school-board

I'm not involved with schools anymore, but from where I sit, there is a lot of social engineering going on.

Thought I'd add this one

Wise words from ETFO members. Unions, love ‘em or hate ‘em, serve the interests of their members. It’s when they start getting all “progressive” on us, going after Israeli academics and retired provincial politicians, that they start to make enemies where none are needed. Guys, some free advice. Look after your membership. Leave the politics out of our classrooms.

In Texas, these are the results of school boards dominated by Republicans and most of them born again Christians.

47 in the nation in literacy

49 in the nation in SAT scores

46 in the nation in math scores

36 in the nation in graduation rates

3rd in teen age pregnancies

1st in repeat pregnancies

yeah but... they excel in football! Which likely compensates for the first four items and accounts for the last two. :P

Would you prefer if a right wing, big money, assault the poor, racist, homophobic curriculum were taught?

Why do people always toss in that "homophobic" bullshit - Real homosexual are totally rare...like one millionth of one percent of the population. Also the term "big money" is a tad dirty...most people worhip money and kiss the ass of those they call big money - so shut up!

"Assault the poor"? We all do that...as long as one slave is kicking the shit out of the lower slave - who in turn abuses the even lower slave - the system runs it self.

Out of 100 countries researched for Newsweek’s “The World’s Best Countries” based on education, health, economy, quality of live, politics, etc, Canada ranked #7 overall but # 2 in education. Once again, Canadian teachers and schools should be applauded for educating children to compete with their peers throughout the world. As a parent, I would not worry that a particular partisan political view is reflected in some classes; my goal for my child is to get the tools and knowledge he will need to compete in the 21st century.

If you think the studies reflect a partisan political viewpoint, this would be a good teaching moment for you, his family, to present him with an alternate view. The dinner table is a wonderful classroom. Teaching children to think for themselves is one of the greatest gifts you can give a child; he does not need partisan baggage from a teacher or his family…..give him the tools and let him decide for himself as he makes his way in his world.

Simple - 30 million people in Canada, means there are only .3 gay people in this country. Or maybe one person who is 30% gay.

That's odd because I've worked with datasets that show nearly 9% of Canadians have had homosexual relationships. I'm curious how he gets 0.000001%.

Must depend on the school board because 2 of mine were in the gifted program. And they still test for inclusion if the parent so wishes every year.

 Care to explain that one?

Sure...

There are eunuchs (can't spell) that are created by God to serve God - There are de-sexed people that are created by men to serve men...(conditioned or created gays) and there is a third catagory I forget...what I meant was that nature does have quirks and does create non-breeding human beings...they used to be in the angelic realm...these types are acceptable..but men who practice the gay thing who are not gay have been around for centuries also...point being....natures or Gods...little quirks of creation that we call gay that are acutually sexless entities - they usually end up the pillow biter under the dominance of some cheeze ball sodomist to lazy to husband a woman....To clarify - gay is rare .........The politicalizing of gay..has stretched out and expanded the numbers...

If a young kid so much as is touched sexually by another of the same sex these days...and it becomes known - that child is led down that path of gaydom...where in nature it would have been like two pups in the early stages of hormornal developement...Just don't believe that as some propogate that 10% of the populace is gay....when I was a kid there were only two gays...and we never had a title for them...There was old man Fontaine...a man of about 80 who wore sneakers..at that was the gay banner...sneakers!

And then there was Bob..who attempted to manage rock bands...who was a friend of Randy who was a father at 15 who now for some reason has adopted the gay life style...It might have had something to do with his uncle who liked to blow the kids to amuse himself when he was baby sitting.....I don't believe Randy is gay - I believe he was conditioned.
