New Look for parliament

I didn't beleive this when I saw it. my first thought was, is this Canada?

Looks like parliament may be hitting the fabled glass cieling.

I'm starting to think the CRTC approved reporting false news. You know the middle east, now parliament being moved for 7 years.

One might question the ceremonial and legal effect of shutting down parliament for 7 years.

this quote is gold

The project was officially unveiled by commission architect Linda Dicaire, who said the spectacular dome is necessary to “provide parliament with a dignified chamber and quality facility worthy of Canada's most democratic institution."

Not when they're out of commission for restoration.

Maybe Harper can prorogue government untill the restration is done? It's simply not needed and a complete waste of time and money, it will go over budget and take longer than expected. So no I don't support this blatant waste of money.

Can you find a conference room that is available for seven years, secure, and will fit 300 MPs?

There are several unused warehouses in Ottawa that would be more than adequate to house our government temporarily. Put in a few chairs, a coupld tables, some security outside, ect ect .. would save a lot of money.

It would better qualify you to comment on what makes a good temporary Commons chamber.

As a Canadian citizen, I'd rather see that money spent more wisely on things that matter. This facility is a TEMPORARY one, that will run over budget and will not be completed by 2018. Then even more money will be spent fixing up the current facility so they can move back in after. I bet if you ask the politicians to chip in some of their hard earned money to buil the new facility, you'd get laughed at.

Yes, it likely will go over-budget. But, politicians pay taxes just like you. And it's only a temporary Commons chamber; it'll still be useable space after that; the plan is to make it into committee rooms. I can't think of any other alternative; there's no buildings nearby (i.e. within the parliamentary precinct where all the MPs and support staff's offices are) that would have a secure space big enough to hold all our MPs for seven years and be fitted with all the required audio/visual equipment. There's the Chateau Laurier, but I doubt the management would be willing to give up their ballroom for nearly a decade, and the Victoria Museum (where the Commons set up after the Centre Block burned down in 1916) is now, well... a museum.

Canada isn't a banana republic. I'm sure you'd be just as happy seeing the government run from a tent but here in the real world buildings don't last forever. Things wear out need replacing, need restoration. The place needs to be safe for the public to enter.

Sounds ridiculously expensive.

If this is built, this building better be used and used damn well after they move back in to their regular digs.

The last time they had to relocate they used the Museum on Mcleod street. I don't know why they couldn't do the same again It's already got a big, ugly glass dome attached and was just renovated (thus the big ugly glass dome). The museum of nature isn't all that popular anyway. We could put it aside for a while.

but wasn't that like 100 years ago? I doubt there's still a giant room inside to house the MP's. Maybe they could use the room i remember with the giant dinosaur (t-rex?) skeleton.

Heck, actually maybe they could use the War Museum, when i was there it had a massive space that housed aircraft & other big vehicles, here: Linky. that's not too far from the Hill. We could make the Commons an exhibit there: "A-holes who start wars".

The Canadian Aviation Museum also has a massive hangar (obviously). It's in Rockcliffe and a 15min drive from the Hill.
