After reading through the "Ed Stelmach resigns" thread and listening to all the responses, I'm curious who public opinion will put in his chair. I'm not looking for who you would WANT to see take the job, but who you BELIEVE will take the job. If you choose "Other" as a party, please specify which one.

Since there are so many posters saying that out of the 3.7million people in the province, "more than half" are from elsewhere (immigrated), then results on this board which are open to everyone should be close (maybe). Let the polling begin.

The Tories will win easily, of course(though no election for a long time).

I picked Mar for the reasons you said not to.....he'd be a fine Premier.

It is Dinnings job if he wants it though.

What do you mean "reasons I said not to"? I'm curious.

Because of this:

I'm not looking for who you would WANT to see take the job, but who you BELIEVE will take the job.

I'd like to see Gary Mar, get the job, but in reality it will likely be Jim Dinning. From Calgary, social liberal, fiscal conservative (as measured on the current Tory scale)

I would be absolutely gobsmacked if it was not somebody from Calgary, that is a lock.

The government should do something.

social liberal?

Don't you live in Alberta, or are you just playing the fool again?

The only Tory candidate I know of that is not a social liberal is Morton. That cost him the leadership last time, and will again.

FFS, try and keep up to events in your own backyard. Oh, and just so you understand: your insults about rural people reveal you as an utterly bigoted twat. The commments about jesusland illustrates that you don't know where the Godbothering vote went. Hint: think of a flower, a well known Alberta flower.

Well, he is somewhat right though. I live in rural, western Canada. Now, I'm not saying that everyone is a religious whack job...but they aren't an endangered species either.

Well, they're becoming that way fast in Alberta. Maybe not in central Canada where you are (Man), but certainly the "god-fearing" part of people is disappearing.

Wyly is no more than one of the following:

1) One of those guys who tried going to university because his buddies do. Ended up drinking way too much and too often at the campus pub (which was cool at the time), and has now moved to drinking in the bars in the university district at night, after finishing his job for the day (hint: it comes with an apron, an optional hat, and perhaps some electronics that would remind you of Madonna).

You're right, they are diminishing in number, but they're far more common than in places like Winnipeg or Calgary. It mostly comes from people with a lack of education...and where I live, that's not uncommon...

I don't know why you are a bigot, you'll have to try a little introspection to answer that.

I do know why I have pointed out that you are a bigot: because you label rural people as somehow being hillbillies and religious freaks and bigots. It is not the first time you have done it, and no doubt not the last. That is how bigots and racists work- they know little and learn nothing. They label groups of disparate people as having common characteristics. In reality, the only thing rural people truly share is that they do not live in large cities, which in your book makes them worthy of contempt. That makes you a bigot, not them.

Your comment about knowing nothing about the poltical leadership of your own home is an illustration of that. Well played, sir.

The government should do something.

Dunno about that. My own experience of rural areas is that there's precious little opportunity for the truly ignorant. There are some, certainly, but if you really really want to find an uniformed and un-analytical/ ignorant/ sexist/racist/religious nutcake, you shouldn't be looking among pragmatic, independent and self-employed folks- which is what the majority of rural people are.

Look instead among those who are well-rewarded for fairly menial, repetitive work that entails little responsibility.... aka urban settings.

I think it's the Alberta NDP's time to shine. They'll tap into the historical populist leaning in the province. This should be a shoe-in.

Well, that assessment is quite the conversation-stopper.

I can't help but think, though that 'Conservative' is such a habit in Alberta- a tradition and a fashion more than an actual philosophy- a required label rather than an actual description of the politics- that sooner or later folks will acknowledge the meaninglessness of it and start voting for truth in labelling.

As in... instead of voting for the NDP-thinking guy who sought and got the Conservative nomination, just vote NDP instead.

Dunno why the NDP keep sourpuss, chubby Mason as leader.

Rachel Notley is a far more interesting person, a newer face, articulate etc...... They could rocket up to 5 seats with Notley leading.

The poll asks "Who will win".

I am going to reserve my vote for a bit until I see some more posts roll in. I am laughing about a couple of the NDP posts above, and I think that was the intention. While the NDP roots came out of Alberta, its been many many many decades since they held the populist appeal. The populists have not turned to the NDP and the NDP has not harvested the populist vote because there is always something fresher growing in the Alberta grassroots that sprouts up to uphold Albertas traditional populist core. The Liberals have the same problems. Something new will take hold before the traditional party rises up.

Lots of new parties have sprouted out of Alberta, and that trend is likely to continue.

There is a place for all these diverse opinions, and regardless of Alberta maintaining long running Majority Governments, when the winds of change blow... just look at whats happening on the ground and not a party banner.

I am still checking out the seeds.
