Topaz Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 A Saskatchewan farm couple whose land is the world's largest carbon capture and storage project says greenhouse gases are seeping through the soil and have killed animals and ground water is foaming to the surface. I remember this story last year , when the couple complained about what was happening. Dr. Suzuki said then, that deadly gas would come through the soil if this was done and he and another scientist in the US said the same thing. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/greenpage/environment/carbon-injected-underground-now-leaking-saskatchewan-farmers-study-says-113276449.html Quote

Michael Hardner Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Uh.... explosions ? CO2 isn't even flammable ? Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
wyly Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Uh.... explosions ? CO2 isn't even flammable ? bursts/eruptions of CO2...same thing that happens when you open can of coke... Quote “Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.”- John Stuart Mill
Michael Hardner Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I guess so, but if somebody says 'my coke can exploded' I don't picture a gigantic plume of blame engulfing them... Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
wyly Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I guess so, but if somebody says 'my coke can exploded' I don't picture a gigantic plume of blame engulfing them... maybe a poor choice of words...but in context if you were on the site and large plume of bubbling CO2 and mud came erupted out of the ground you would be forgiven for describing it as exploding... dre Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 The problem is CO2 is way heavier than air, so it can cellect in low lying areas when its not windy, and kill large ammounts of people and animals. If too much is released you could end up with a situation similar to what happened in Lake Nyos. Lake Nyos sometimes belches huge bubbles of CO2, and that CO2 pours down the valley below the lake following the same path the river takes. In 1986 a CO2 bubble killed a couple of thousand people, and lots of livestock. Quote I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger

Michael Hardner Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Coool. That's you and your friends then ? Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
eyeball Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 No, they didn't make mentos when I was experimenting with blowing shit up which is probably a good thing. Touch powder was my favourite. I imagine if you try to buy the ingredients for that these days you'd have a SWAT team dropping in for a visit. wyly Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I new guy back in my high school days who blew a school toilet of the mounting bolts by flushing lithium I think was, lithium and water don't get along well... then there were the fly land mines, don't recall the formula but it was made of household chemicals...paint it on when it's wet and when it dries becomes highly unstable, tiny little dots on the school windows supplied entertainment during class when the flies stepped on the mixture and the resulting explosion rattled the windows... teenage boys and chemicals a dangerous mix... That's touch powder. Our science teacher introduced us the stuff by placing a few small squares of paper towel with a small pile of dried powder on it. Stepping on it made it bang like a cap. It was iodine crystals mixed with ammonium if I recall. Edited January 14, 2011 by eyeball Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
WIP Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Uh.... explosions ? CO2 isn't even flammable ? Try to connect the dots! The leaks dump cold water on carbon sequestration schemes.
