Now is harper doing it right, I see the euro's and americans not happy ,because they are use to the old canada that just did what it was told. I see china coming on stronger because harper showed them he will not be a pushover as former PM's did, and in the long run china will have more respect for canada. People say he shows no leadership abroad, I am seeing he is and doing a damn good job to get ready for the new world order.

I doubt China loses much sleep over Canada. We're small potatoes, no matter what way you try to write the story.

Ya we are small ,china does not care about out resourses or what we have for investment then, I guess that is why china is buying this country up. I live in small town canada and the chinnese are buying these towns up and doing it fast.

The Chinese are going to LOVE us over the next few years and I doubt they think that way, no matter how much you want to see Harper fail.

With China so willing to pet Canada's ego and Russia poised to financially invest in us substantially...one might begin to think they are trying to buy/secure Canada's vote/position on what should replace the current reserve...ie: SDR or other. Or, is Harper using our resource cache and fiscal stability to entice them and secure them?

It is to bad people are like that, to let their hatred of someone blind them, or just don't have any pride in their country.

Part of being a succesful politician is getting the desired results. When Harper spoke of Canada being a " world player " , the very countries that he thought he was going to gain more pull with are the ones that see our influence as the least! I would hardly call that success.

Maybe Harper has had some effect on the other countries, but I doubt that the goodwill there has as much to do with him as it has to do with years and years of Canadian foreign policy from previous Conservative and Liberal governments.

ditto. When the sh*t hits the fan, real power is determined by military capabilities and "soft" power like the economy. Our military capabilities are pretty ho-hom compared to many other countries, and we are far from an economic powerhouse. Canada does have some political influence and is seen as a "moral leader", but that only goes so far.

While we are not a "powerhouse", Canada's economy is the world's tenth largest and has fared better in the recent economic downturn than that of most other advanced nations. Additionally, we control vast amounts of natural resources, many of which we have not yet begun to exploit, leaving significant space for future growth, unlike many other nations which are already utilizing or have depleted significant portions of their natural resources.

Actually the opposite is true. The SHIT is hitting the fan, and the countries best posed to whether the storm are countries that have their fiscal and economic policy under control.

If we had endeavored to be a military power over the last few decades we would be in BIG BIG trouble right about now. Western nations have financed descretional spending almost exlusively with borrowed money, and theyre gonna wake up wih a hell of a hangover soon.

Wow didn't think we were quite that high. Though if you adjust for purchasing power parity, Canada drops to 14th. Still pretty good. I thought we'd be like around #20.

Yes i agree, our economic performance during the recession has helped our rep.

PPP means very little when you're talking about buying something right now. We're actually far more influential than many think.
