bush_cheney2004 Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Oh my...how did this slip by? The Manitoba NDP government is being criticized for a sharp rise in cancellations of heart surgeries and cardiac-related tests over the last three years. Opposition health critic Myrna Driedger said on Thursday that between 2006 and the end of 2009, the number of cancelled heart surgeries has risen dramatically. "There were 116 cancellations in 2006, but in 2009, that number more than doubled to 262 — including 43 cancellations in the month of December alone," Driedger said in a statement. The Progressive Conservative MLA said she has spoken to front-line doctors who say bed shortages in the cardiac intensive care unit at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg are to blame. The average wait time for cardiac surgery in February was 36 days, Driedger said, adding that patients needing elective surgeries can wait up to two months. Patients needing heart stress tests and other diagnostic measures are also subject to months-long waits, Driedger said. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

Smallc Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 That month old story is...old news. Here are the current wait times: http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/waittime/surgical/heart.html The only thing that has too long a wait in Manitoba is an MRI...and that should come under control within the next six months with the addition of a new machine (it's already online, but another is being replaced, meaning that there are still only 7 operating and not 8 - there will be at least 11 by 2012 as well as 1 small private MRI that is sometimes contracted...but not often...because it sucks, apparently. The government had contracted it full time, but the image quality was terrible.) and many more technicians. Also, there is a reason that heart surgery wait times are currently slightly higher than usual. The Bergen Cardiac Centre of Excellence is currently undergoing major renovations: http://news.gov.mb.ca/news/index.html?archive=&item=5838 Quote

You know, thinking about it, I can't help but feel that this story was designed to provoke a response from me. I'll remember for next time....and I won't bother. I only chose to respond in this case in order to clear up misunderstanding around what I knew was a stupid story when I saw it a month ago. Edited May 20, 2010 by Smallc Quote

Smallc Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 He's on ignore...unfortunately, I can't ignore topic headings, and since I had already read this story last month and knew it was stupid (because of correspondence I've had with Manitoba Health among other things) I thought I should fill in the details. Smallc Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 I wonder if Manitoba Mental Health could assist him in his OCD of Canada? Well...they are currently planning for the construction (later this year) of a mental health ER.....maybe they could help him. Quote

Smallc Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 ER might be too short term... I'm thinkng a team of shrinks could retire on this guy... Well, they could send him to Selkirk......but, maybe higher security (than medium) would be necessary, in which case, he would have to be sent out of province. Quote

Oleg Bach Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Doctors some of which are monetary refugees - attempt to become rich in Canada - so they go for sheer volume of patients - from a sniffle to having to attend their office to full a life long perscription - in order to collect governmental fees - the effect is that there are huge amounts of people who are addicted to social medicine and clog the pipe of effeciency for a pat on the head...and to be told they have a common cold..and the doctors are more than happy to facilitate this addiction to constant coddling attention - I will never forget this Asian student who was interviewed who wanted to be a doctor in Canada - When asked why..he state "Because the money is real good" _ I don't want this ass hole operating on me..I want a dedicated humanitarian who cares...one with natural skill and benevolence. BubberMiley Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 (edited) So this is another case of Captain America telling us how poor our health system is? I believe it's actually Captain Regina (because women can be captains too). Because if it were a real American, it would take a profound inferiority complex to spend all your time on a Canadian political forum, cherry-picking the occasional mildly negative article about a small, have-not province's health care system and feeling like you've really got something. And I don't think Americans are really all that obsessed with Canada, and few of them have such an inferiority complex. Michael Hardner Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 With regards to Bush_Cheney I think you guys are shooting the messenger. I appreciate the fact that an American takes the time to criticize our system because we ourselves don't do it enough. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

fellowtraveller Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Dunno about Manitoba, but here 'average wait times' can be very misleading. My experience has been that if your personal situation is urgent, there is no wait time. Of course, every urgent case then bumps back less urgent cases. And yes, even cardiac cases have degrees of urgency and every medical specialist can tell you some are timewasters, GPs practising defensive medicine though never to the extent they do in the US.
