The black guy could have simply walked away from that one... but he chose to stand and challenge all 3 of them... some may call this brave, but many would call this stupid- he wasn't fighting for self defense, he wasn't fighting for the sake of somebody else... so really it's not clear why the black guy was in this situation... add to that the defalayed/concealed JOHNNY ON THE SPOT WITH THE CAMERA factor... and you have your doubts... this whole scene reeks... Ever heard of mob mentality? It's the same thing, but in this case, race related. Too bad, Courtenay is a beautiful spot. Indeed, on Thursday or Friday about a 1000 people attended an anti-racism rally in Courtnay to show that they do not condone such behaviour. Judging the town by the actions of a few twerps is just as ridiculous as the actions of little twerps themselves. The media is even reluctant to identify the race of the attackers, lest it cause offense. Thugs are thugs. I don't for the life of me understand why liberal types gets indignant only when it's whites attacking a black guy, or when some gay guy gets beaten up because he's gay. Some people say motivation is always a consideration in sentencing. That's true, but only insofar as whether or not the motive in any way excuses the behavior of the attacker. Generally, when motive is a factor it happens when the person who was attacked could be said to have provoked the attack in some way, or if the attacker was high on drugs or alcohol, and so unable to form intent. But three thugs who beat a guy up just for fun are in no way more innocent than three guys who beat a guy up for fun because the guy is black or gay. Some swagging asshole who likes to throw his weight around should be locked up so he can play with like-minded assholes, regardless of why he attacked someone, unless there are extenuating circumstances. The very idea of a "hate crime" is intellectually bankrupt and morally indefensible. Three swaggering punks mock, ridicule, and beat the crap out of a guy because he looks weak, or he looks like a pansy, or he looks like a geek, or has goofy hair, or he has acne or just because, get punished one way, but if they beat up a guy cause he's black or gay it's in a whole other league? "Conspiracy" as a statutory offense has nearly been abolished. The notion however that someone gets into a fist fight because of the race or hairstyle of a certain person cannot by any stretch of the imagination be prosecuted as a "conspiracy". 2/ Assault is not the same as thought... there's a reason why western style justice systems operate under what "DAMAGE" is caused. I can tell if someone has had a nose broken, I can tell when a home has been arsoned, I can tell when teeth have been knocked out- I can tell if someone caused bodily harm as self defense.... I CANNOT tell however, when people are victimized by WORDS THAT ARE SAID TO THEM, or by thoughts thunk by a perpetrator- there is NO WAY of knowing someone is victimized by thoughts or words. if someone is shot because of a certain style of clothes, why is this somehow less egregious, and less deserving of punishment then if someone is shot because of his race? Again, "hate crime" is a slap in the face to our whole conception of justice. 3/ there had never been "laws" such as a "hate crimes" until the early 2000's... hate crimes are a completely novel concept... and even today, there are numerous problems with their "enactment". In places where interracial crime stats are compiled (such as the US) 85 of interracial crimes are black-on-white, yet reading newspapers and watching TV news does not confirm this reality. In fact the conservative victories in the past two elections have hinged so much on the visible minority vote. I can’t see the party really enacting policies that will upset them. I suggest if you vote conservative due to a false belief that somehow they will fulfill your racialist fantasies, I'd suggest you start yourself another party that will because the Canadian torys is not it. I didn't ask you that. Has it occurred to you the person that asked you might be a conservative? Let’s take this topic elsewhere…. Halifax is one of the most beautiful towns in Canada in my opinion, and I've done some extensive work there, and while by no means am I trying to generalize, many there don't take kindly to taking orders from someone with darker skin. Racism in the job market and especially higher echelons of corporate offices still exist. Many still believe "All races are created equal, but some more equal than others". I find racist to be both of liberal and conservative political alignment, of every colour, ethnicity and background. This is why anti-discrimination laws exist.
