Chuck U. Farlie Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Does anyone know of a property tax calculator or spreadsheet of tax rates for cities throughout Canada? I am looking for something like this: http://www.thestar.com/Article/349083 but this one is only for the GTA. I want to compare the major cities in Canada and figure out which city is the most affordable to own property in - I easily found charts that compared the cost to buy a house and the ranking of those cities, but now I want to compare the property taxes paid on these properties. August1991 Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 (edited) Here's a link to a calculator of Montreal's property tax. Here's a link to a pdf page with property tax rates according to usage and neighbourhood (arrondissement). Be careful though. These property taxes do not include school taxes. Moreover, parking spaces are often treated as separate properties and are taxed in addition to a residence. Changes to tax rates are typically graduated over four years so people don't always pay the rate quoted. Finally, property evaluation (the name of the game in municipal taxes) is an art not a science. [incidentally, elsewhere in the world, all taxes -including income taxes- are paid as we in Canada pay property taxes. A government official assesses a person annually, determines income and family situation, and gives each a bill to pay. I frankly think our federal government should operate this way as long as the tax bill is due on election day. Blame Milton Friedman for the invention of payroll deduction of income tax.] Edited February 11, 2009 by August1991 Quote
fellowtraveller Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 Finally, property evaluation (the name of the game in municipal taxes) is an art not a science. A more accurate description would be 'shell game'. Municiplaities use the mill rate to make the numbers sit up and bark, few people understand what is going on and that suits the bureaucrats just fine. Quote The government should do something.
