Gov. David Paterson has picked Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand to fill New York's vacant Senate seat, an aide to the governor said early Friday, a day after Caroline Kennedy abruptly withdrew from consideration.

Gillibrand, a second-term lawmaker from upstate New York, will be named to fill the seat vacated when Hillary Vlinton resigned to become secretary of state in the Obama administration, the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity because an announcement hadn't been made. An announcement was scheduled for later Friday.

As I suspected earlier, Paterson picked a female lawmaker. He had been making noises about doing so. Some thought he might choose Maloney but given that whoever was picked would have to fight for the seat in an election later on, I think they went with someone who has been able to knock off Republicans in the past.

Very surprising to me, as Mrs Gillibrand had a very low profile in this up to now.

She appears to have delivered a serious beat-down to her Republican opponent in the past election, but she's from upstate and might not have much recognition with voters in the big city.

Maybe New Yorkers are tired of "carpetbaggers".

Her biggest fight might be the primary challenge coming from within her own party.

NYS is so heavily Democrat, the Republicans should quit that party and try and make a difference within the Democrat party, as Ms. Gallibrand seemingly has done.

I don't know about that. In the spring of last year, some thought she might make play for the Governor's office. That was the first time I heard her name aside from some of the work she did in the Clinton administration.

She was considered a rising star in the party. I think the only thing that might hold her up from winning the primary later on is her support for the rights of gunowners. It could be an issue with Democrats from the city.
