"Canada knows I was tortured. Canada knows that the information was wrong. This is good news for me. Now, we wait to see what the government has to say," El Maati said.

I think what he's saying is "show me the money!"

The Globe and Mail revealed last week that the Toronto truck driver had been the subject of an intensive counterterrorism investigation before he flew from Canada to Syria in the fall of 2001. Months earlier, he was stopped at the Canada-U.S. border and grilled for about eight hours about a map said to detail government buildings in Ottawa.

Mr. El-Maati denied the map was his. But suspicion surrounding him appears to have been augmented by the fact that the FBI is looking for his brother, Amer, whose Canadian citizenship papers have been found in Afghanistan.

Would it be un-Canadian to ask him to whom the map, which I assume was in his truck, belonged? Or should be just get out the cheque book?

As a CSIS employee perhaps he was in a compromising situation and now just won't be able to find a job quite the same, and so his compensation may also include severance pay.

Or perhaps political employee .. who knows. anyway there is a court process anyway.. of course national security and criminal justice are two slightly different things.. it is part of that veil of secrecy in government.

The arar thing and others same deal... people just don't know who the people really are because there is a big evil out there.. not that these are anything more than ramblings anyway... people don't and can never have a clue..

A reporter at Stockwell Day's press conference asked him if he would categorize the torture of the three men in a Syrian prison as being just as bad as what happened to Arar. Day replied that it was not up to him to assess equivalency between the cases. Obviously, had Day said yes, he would have committed the government to paying equal compensation, or more, to the three men. The question of an apology was also raised. Day made it clear he is not involved in the process of determining compensation or other considerations in these cases.

I saw one of the three interviewed, can't remember which, on Duffy. He looked absolutely buoyed and gleeful. Man, the prospect of those cool millions sure makes you forget your pain some quick.

Said map was said to detail Ottawa government buildings. I wonder who is saying those things?

If these guys were tortured they should sue the Syrian government. I don't see how we should pay them one red cent. Did we send them home - oh, excuse me, I forgot, they're "Canadians", but did we tell them to and visit Syria? I don't think so. Too bad, so sad.
