Campaign Blunders

Recommended Posts

Conservatives:

Not addressing the economy first and there by allowing Layton, whose grasp odf the economy could be challenged by a retarded baboon set the agenda, parrotted by Dion and creating a climate of fear. They should have taken layton to task and ask how taxing busines more would create jobs in a slowing economy. This cost them greater Ontario representation.

Culture-Not truly understanding Quebec. No other province has a culture industry stonger and less in need of Government largess than Quebec. Yet by poo pooing culture and not stressing the funding to grass roots cultural events in the province they handed the Bloc the election issue they were grasping for. This cost them the majority.

Liberals:

Choosing Dion as Leader.

Greenshift and not being able to articulate it better than the fringe party could. They lost votes to the Greens because of this.

NDP:

By pretending Jack Layton could be PM and there by not being taken seriously by more than 4 out of 5 voters.

Green Party. Who care?

Bloc: Pretty well flawless campaign.

I think the Tory strategy was to ignore the NDP entirely. This based on the logical belief that few of those inclined to vote NDP would ever switch to the Tories and vice versa. Attacking the NDP only gave strength to the Liberals.

Those miniscule cuts prior to the election became a cause celebré in Quebec. Sometimes these things just happen. There was no sense or sensibility in it. The cuts were minor, to poorly working programs, the overall culture budget was higher. Nevertheless, Quebec's 'culture industry' went on the warpath against the Tories - not coincidencal that virtually all members of Quebec's culture industry are separatists - and in keeping with Duceppe's dire fearmongering had an influence out of all proportion to what you would have expected. Quebecers allowed themselves to be herded like the sheep they are, in a direction which went against their best interests. They will have less say in government, and the culture industry is likely to get an ass kicking in the coming budgets.

Bill C-10 pandered to the religious right and the artists' subsidy cuts saved a minimal amount of money. But those weren't the biggest problems. Harper got sanctimonious over C-10 (and finally withdrew it in his platform) and sounded like an old style philistine when talking about culture and art.

Without these errors of judgment he was on the cusp of a majority.

The whole Con campaign was a blunder and the fact that this is the result says something about Canadian voters. Everything that happened in this campaign is a precursor to more scandals and bungling during the next four years, by the end of which I'm sure most Canadians will be wondering "what were we thinking?" and vote in a nice Liberal majority.
