Missed this from last week.....looks like Layton wants to channel some Barack Obama mojo....NAFTA or not:

DENVER – NDP Leader Jack Layton arrived at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado this morning.

Layton will be attending the convention for three days.

"Democrats here are talking about the same kind of change we’re talking about in Canada," said Layton. "Whether it’s real action on climate change, forging trade policies that work for working families or standing up for jobs and better health care, there’s a real desire here to put the concerns of the kitchen table ahead of the boardroom table."

Layton will also be attending the National Democratic Institute’s International Leaders Forum while in Denver and will be speaking to the Labour Caucus of the Democratic Party.

Layton must be shocked that Obama wants to stay in A-Stan. Layton will do anything for attention.

Well, at least everybody knows where Layton stands on NAFTA. Is Obama still in favor of renegotiating it, or is that just when he's campaigning in Ohio and Michigan?

DENVER - Dismissing criticism of being AWOL during Canada's food recall crisis, Health Minister Tony Clement said Tuesday his trip to the Democratic National Convention was part of a robust new effort to inject Canadian interests into U.S. politics.

"We believe and prime minister Stephen Harper believes that we have to be more aggressive in representing Canadian values and interests in the American political scene," Clement told Canwest News Service from the convention on Tuesday.

Yes, nothing could possibly be more urgent for Canada's Health Minister than telling Americans about Canada's values.

Way to go Tony and Steve, eh. :P

Nafta is a vital Canadian interest.

And there's no better qualified Canadian than the Health Minister to tell them so.

And there's no better place for the Health Minister to tell them so than at the Democratic Convention when the focus of Americans is on what Canada has to say.

Given that he is one of 3 Cabinet minister there and the Canadian Pharmaceutical industry is a 18 billion plus dollar enterprise including in excess of 2 billion in trade with the US...

You tell me. Was Obama the only person there?

And so the nameless Cabinet Minister spoke to? And of course this conversation could only have happened at the Democratic Convention.

Nameless? I take it reading the articles was above your skill level?

Stategically yes. It is at a crucial time framce when every jr and senior democratic policy advisr and legislator would be in the same room standing on the brink of possibly forming the next government in a few short months.

I can't for the life of me think of a better time or place to start high level introductions and to present Canada to a group who quite franky don't have us high on the radar. That would also be the reason a delagation is off at the Republican convention for the very same reasons.

Now if you have an idea of when and where it would be better to meet a potential new administration before they take office, I'm all ears.

And no doubt Canada's strategic interests are a high priority for them at this crucial time of trying to convince Americans to vote for them.

Obvioulsy if they were already a high priority there would be no need to send the ministers....but since one of those two groups will be the next admin, now id the time to put Canadian issues into the minds of people who will be forming policy. Too late once they have already tabled their agendas.

Explain the use of "apes" in the header. Seems racist to me.

Did it seemed racist to you when critics referred to President Bush as "Chimp"? The word "apes" was purposely chosen to reverse such political love. Note: Jack Layton is the subject, not object in the thread's title. Either way, I knew that somebody would bite and run with it.....thanks!

The poster could have avoided this apparent racism by using the header Jack Layton apes Tony Clement.

Why/how would that avoid the "apparent racism"? Is Tony Clement also not a primate?

That's two!

Are you kidding me? What happened to "poodle syndrome"? You know, those grand political charades about Harper and Bush, or even Howard Dean speaking at the Grits' convention a while back. Now it is just smart pre-planning to save NAFTA from Obama's rhetoric?

It's embarrassing if what you say pans out....talk about "brown nosing"!!!!

your equation missed the mark.

One Q. Why would crtics refer to Bush as a chimp?

Beats me, but you can Google "Bush" and "Chimp" to see for yourself.

Meanwhile, back at the Zoo:

APE:

1. Any of various large, tailless Old World primates of the family Pongidae, including the chimpanzee, gorilla, gibbon, and orangutan.

2. A monkey.

3. A mimic or imitator.
