Dubai crown prince buys camel for record 2.7 mln dlrs

While tin cups are shaking for aid, and working Westerners are being tapped for money to help the largely Muslim Sahel of Africa (remember "We Are the World" or the Canadian analog "Tears Are Not Enough" from 1984-5), and we help earthquake victims in Pakistan, Algeria and Iran as well as tsunami victims in Indonesia, the Muslim world which unites so well for malign causes doesn't lift a finger for fellow Muslims in need. Why is it that youngsters at the two synagogues I belong to regularly raise money to help (Muslim) Dharfurians? The article below, about a prince who paid $2.7 million for a camel, in a contest with prize money totalling around 9.5 million dollars, may provide some of the answers. Link to excerpts of article:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - The crown prince of the United Arab Emirates of Dubai has bought a female camel for a record 2.72 million dollars, an organiser at a camel beauty pageant said on Monday.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum "bought camels... worth 16.5 million dirhams (4.49 million dollars), including a female camel... for 10 million dirhams (2.72 million dollars)," Hamad bin Kardoum al-Amiri said.

************

More than 10,000 camels -- including females which are the fasting racing camels -- from across the Gulf are competing for prize money totalling around 9.5 million dollars. One hundred cars are also up for grabs.

The contest is part of a camel festival in Abu Dhabi that aims to celebrate and preserve the region's cultural heritage.

Oil-rich Abu Dhabi, one of seven emirates that make up the UAE federation, produced the world's first test-tube purebred camel and has begun using remote-controlled robot riders in its camel races in place of child jockeys.

It boosts my respect for Islam.

I thought you guys believed that capitalism was the answer to the world's ills? Paying that much for camels means that even the lonely stable hand will eat for the next week..... Perhaps if Donald Trump invested in camels too you might be a little more tolerant. AH, but it isn't the cost that bothers you now is it.... Arabs and brown people aren't supposed to invest in their own cultural icons....and unless that investment is in western goods, then all other capitalism is evil.

As Jobs Vanish and Prices Rise, Food Stamp Use Nears Record

Driven by a painful mix of layoffs and rising food and fuel prices, the number of Americans receiving food stamps is projected to reach 28 million in the coming year, the highest level since the aid program began in the 1960s.

Wow! Another unrelated rant filled with opinion and no facts. What does your rant have to do with my surprise at cloned Camels and robot Jockey's?

Could you also provide a link showing that the stable hand will eat for a week because I've seen no indications of this.

Once again, what does my surprise at cloned Camels and robot Jockeys have to do with Arabs and brown people not being supposed to have any cultural icons? When have I ever said anything even remotely resembling what you claim? Provide the link please.

You really should try to refrain from making stuff up and then attributing it to others when it clearly can not be.

Most US rich people head organizations that employ and feed many people. Most also pay taxes that, to some extent, benefit the general polity. This sheik's moneys are from extraction of a resource, oil, which itself was developed, paid for, and stolen from private companies.

The Daily Racing Form reported the sale price at between $60 million and $70 million. The previous high is believed to be $40 million, which was paid for Shareef Dancer in 1983. Fusaichi Pegasus will race through the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, in November for his owner, Fusao Sekiguchi. Sekiguchi, a Japanese venture capitalist who paid $4 million for Fusaichi Pegasus in 1998, won't retain any ownership for breeding purposes.

I love to see the relatives get on so...

What were your results when Googling "Dubai charity works" ?

It returned 10 pages+ for me. Sigh.....so much for that.

Don't see Dubai on there...

However, Dubai leads the world it what I call 'pet projects' like artificial islands, World's tallest building, 6 star hotels, et al. I'd love to go and visit the Burj al-Arab, but I think I'd also be shocked at the opulence. The socialist in me would start gnashing his teeth. This while sipping tea in the underwater restaurant that is reached via submarine!

To be fair to Dubai, though...there's only about 1.5 million of them and many of them are temp-immigrants including Canadian engineers and such. But, there's no doubting that Palm Island could hold a good number of low rent housing projects.

I sure wouldn't want a run-in with the law in Dubai, however. One fellow apparently did 4 years for transporting poppy seeds...that were on his bagel he bought in London.

In my younger days I would probably have worked myself into a state of moral indignation at the thought of such extravagance. Now, I really couldn't give a damn.

If someone is filthy stinkin rich and wants to buy expensive pretty Camels or expensive pretty Horses I couldn't be less interested if I tried. Why shouldn't they do as they please with their money? I most certainly do. If I want the latest liquid cooling ready videocard and it costs $900.00, I buy it. I don't ponder starving people in other countries and I don't listen to those who would possess my money in order to give it to others, it's mine and I do as I please with it.

In my own small way I try to help others, sure. That is not the driving imperative in my life though.

Thats why I find cloned Camels and robot Jockeys far more interesting than which country gives how much. Simply put it doesn't matter one whit whether I think any particular nation gives enough or not enough. They're going to do what they're going to do, with or without my approval.

Don't get me wrong DOP, my little rant wasn't directed at you. I was just musing about how people tend to get so upset about how other people spend their money.

I actually do volunteer and donate to some select causes, I just don't give away the farm.

It's funny how some criticize others vehemently yet aren't willing to sign over their pay cheques as a concrete sign of their convictions. Strange how that works.

So Muslims "don't lift a finger to help fellow Muslims," eh? I decided to look into one of the examples you used to see if there was any truth to your claim, so I went with the most recent-- the "tsuanami victims in Indonesia."

Humanitarian response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake

I looked at the list of donors according to percent of GDP, and not only were Muslim nations included on the list, some came out ahead of the U.S.:

Country/% of GDP

Qatar/ 0.140

Saudi Arabia/ 0.052

United Arab Emirates/ 0.035

United States/ 0.026

So that's quite the unfounded accusation you made there.

Funny...I didn't see Israel on that list. One would think that they are either really tight with their money or they have no compassion for people in crisis - especially when they are not the same religion.

Peanuts compared to This
But he was projected to "earn" $20,000,000 per year for serving as a stud; wouldn't you like to earn that much just having fun?

But seriously, $20,000,000 per year is a fantastic return on investment on even $70,000,000.

The camel purchase strikes me as a debauche.

Yeah, like Alberta is stealing from private companies, right?

jbg: is the oil in Alberta wanted by private companies?

That are willing to pay for it, and pay Alberta a nice stipend for that privelege?

Tell the Albertans that there stealing money from private companies, ok?

Funny...I didn't see any comment from jbg about Isreal not being on the list; nor did I see an admission that not only was he wrong about Muslim nations, but three Muslim nations, including the United Arab Emirates (oh, the irony) gave at a higher rate per GDP than the U.S. did.

The silence is deafening. B)

The Israeli government has sent supplies worth USD 100,000 to each affected country. In addition, an Israeli medical team was dispatched to Sri Lanka, and 150 IDF doctors and rescue and relief teams were mobilised for the region with 82-tonnes of aid including 9 tonnes of medicine, nearly 4,000 L of mineral water, 12 tonnes of food, over 17 tonnes of baby food, 10,000 blankets, tents, sheeting, as well as power generators. An additional offer of assistance to India in the form of search and rescue teams from their Home Front Command as well as food and medicine has also been extended, and the Israeli Ministry of Health has been dispatched to Thailand on medical mission. Bodies identifiers from ZAKA and the Israeli police were also sent.

I was saying what I said about Israel 'tongue in cheek' in light of jbg's (totally wrong) accusation regarding Muslim countries (I notice you have no comment about that....). I thought that would be obvious.

Anyway, I have no desire to get into a pissing contest about which country donated what. As I said, jbg made an unfounded accusation regarding Muslim countries. My only desire was to set that record straight, which I have done.

I suppose the comment you're looking for might be:

There are those who support via money and those who support via action. As well, contributions from Muslim countries tend to be from the governments rather than the individuals. There are exceptions, of course.

As for the "generosity" of the oil countries, given their small populations and the fact that they are Muslim countries their % of GDP donations should be much higher. As for Israel its aid was offered and predictably rejected, though not by India.

I seem to have missed the part where you admit that you were wrong and made a totally unfounded accusation regarding Muslim countries. <_<
