jbg
While tin cups are shaking for aid, and working Westerners are being tapped for money to help the largely Muslim Sahel of Africa (remember "We Are the World" or the Canadian analog "Tears Are Not Enough" from 1984-5), and we help earthquake victims in Pakistan, Algeria and Iran as well as tsunami victims in Indonesia, the Muslim world which unites so well for malign causes doesn't lift a finger for fellow Muslims in need. Why is it that youngsters at the two synagogues I belong to regularly raise money to help (Muslim) Dharfurians? The article below, about a prince who paid $2.7 million for a camel, in a contest with prize money totalling around 9.5 million dollars, may provide some of the answers. Link to excerpts of article: ABU DHABI (AFP) - The crown prince of the United Arab Emirates of Dubai has bought a female camel for a record 2.72 million dollars, an organiser at a camel beauty pageant said on Monday. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum "bought camels... worth 16.5 million dirhams (4.49 million dollars), including a female camel... for 10 million dirhams (2.72 million dollars)," Hamad bin Kardoum al-Amiri said. ************ More than 10,000 camels -- including females which are the fasting racing camels -- from across the Gulf are competing for prize money totalling around 9.5 million dollars. One hundred cars are also up for grabs. The contest is part of a camel festival in Abu Dhabi that aims to celebrate and preserve the region's cultural heritage. Oil-rich Abu Dhabi, one of seven emirates that make up the UAE federation, produced the world's first test-tube purebred camel and has begun using remote-controlled robot riders in its camel races in place of child jockeys. Paying that much for camels means that even the lonely stable hand will eat for the next week..... Perhaps if Donald Trump invested in camels too you might be a little more tolerant. AH, but it isn't the cost that bothers you now is it.... Another unrelated rant filled with opinion and no facts. What does your rant have to do with my surprise at cloned Camels and robot Jockey's? Could you also provide a link showing that the stable hand will eat for a week because I've seen no indications of this. Once again, what does my surprise at cloned Camels and robot Jockeys have to do with Arabs and brown people not being supposed to have any cultural icons? When have I ever said anything even remotely resembling what you claim? Provide the link please. M.Dancer
The Daily Racing Form reported the sale price at between $60 million and $70 million. The previous high is believed to be $40 million, which was paid for Shareef Dancer in 1983. Fusaichi Pegasus will race through the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, in November for his owner, Fusao Sekiguchi. Sekiguchi, a Japanese venture capitalist who paid $4 million for Fusaichi Pegasus in 1998, won't retain any ownership for breeding purposes. I love to see the relatives get on so... AngusThermopyle
In my younger days I would probably have worked myself into a state of moral indignation at the thought of such extravagance. Now, I really couldn't give a damn. If someone is filthy stinkin rich and wants to buy expensive pretty Camels or expensive pretty Horses I couldn't be less interested if I tried. Why shouldn't they do as they please with their money? I most certainly do. If I want the latest liquid cooling ready videocard and it costs $900.00, I buy it. I don't ponder starving people in other countries and I don't listen to those who would possess my money in order to give it to others, it's mine and I do as I please with it. In my own small way I try to help others, sure. That is not the driving imperative in my life though. Thats why I find cloned Camels and robot Jockeys far more interesting than which country gives how much. Simply put it doesn't matter one whit whether I think any particular nation gives enough or not enough. They're going to do what they're going to do, with or without my approval. I was just musing about how people tend to get so upset about how other people spend their money. I actually do volunteer and donate to some select causes, I just don't give away the farm. It's funny how some criticize others vehemently yet aren't willing to sign over their pay cheques as a concrete sign of their convictions. Strange how that works. DogOnPorch
The Israeli government has sent supplies worth USD 100,000 to each affected country. In addition, an Israeli medical team was dispatched to Sri Lanka, and 150 IDF doctors and rescue and relief teams were mobilised for the region with 82-tonnes of aid including 9 tonnes of medicine, nearly 4,000 L of mineral water, 12 tonnes of food, over 17 tonnes of baby food, 10,000 blankets, tents, sheeting, as well as power generators. An additional offer of assistance to India in the form of search and rescue teams from their Home Front Command as well as food and medicine has also been extended, and the Israeli Ministry of Health has been dispatched to Thailand on medical mission.
