Liberals should welcome this strategy by the CPC as it demonstrates and confirms the current desperation in Toryland.

Thought you would have to wait until the next election to write Harper's obituary? This negative campaign will seal his fate as Canadians will not countenance such poliiticing in the context of serious economic dislocation. Tories will offer up smears in answer to continuing tough times.

Harper desperately needs a shakeup of the status quo and is gambling negative ads might turn around his polling numbers. They won't and just like this month's Liberal convention will be a coronation for Ignatieff's leadership, so the next election will be little more than a coronation of Iggy becoming Prime Minister.

As we face the prospect of new mandatory minimums in canada, which would include, 6 months for 1 marijuana plant, one has to wonder what is Harper thinking? As the Americans move toward real reform because of mounting pressure due to incarcerating these types of people , we go backward. The Americans, after having tried this "drug war" for over 30 years, are beginning to realize that spending 100's of billions to keep up this facade is pointless and has only resulted in filling the prisons . Even if you don't use marijuana, it dosen't seem responsible for a government, especially during a recession, to place that kind of a burden financially on the tax payer. These mandatory minimums were a complete and dismall failure in the U.S. creating the highest incarceration rates in the world. I'm pretty sure a responsible adult growing one plant is not a "trafficker" but will be labled as such. As a side note , there are no mandatory minimum sentences for child molestation, rape or murder. Guess Harpers ideolgy is at play again with no regard for the advice he's been given from scientists, economists, or crimimologists, who have voiced serious concern. It has never worked , it won't work and yet here we go. Why are the Liberals backing this bill?

We're still waiting on the election this Spring Jdobbin....it's DEFINETLY happening. Right??? RIGHT???

Think you forgot one key element to my prediction of a spring election: That the Liberals would be in the middle of an expensive and possibly divisive leadership campaign.

That hasn't happened because the Liberals believed strongly that Harper fully intended to pull the plug before May. The Liberals are more or less united, raising money and probably ready to go. The question is whether Harper wants to try his luck.

Liberal Debt is well in excess of $2million. If it was only $2million dollars, the Federal Liberals would have nothing to be concerned over. The Green Party has a $2million Debt, the Liberals are more likely in the 9 to 11 Million dollar range.

Don't forget the government funding. That hasn't changed and Liberal fundraising has certainly improved. They have also made cuts in staffing so that it is a leaner operation.

I have no idea what the figures are and they are likely way below what Tory funds in the bank are. However, the anemic numbers of Dion's times have certainly changed.

Don't count your chickens before they're hatched VC

The Convenient Canadian is an unknown quantity and who knows what's been hid in his closet.

As said, it should be a real dog eat dog fight with Harper pretty well known and CC a mystery.

A coronation, CC's already had his.

I'm dying to see what they've dug up on the Convenient Canadian.

Perhaps not nearly as much as the Opposition can find on Harper, the Professional Politician.

This Professional Politician who claims to be an "economist" has bounced around from being a Young Liberal to Progressive Conservative to Reform to National Citizens Coalition to Alliance to Conservative without once being employed as an economist. And Harper's membership in the Northern Foundation, should the Opposition decide to dig up Harper's sordid anti-libertarian history, will likely shame him far more than anything that the CPC attack dogs will find on Ignatieff.

The Tories must be thinking of calling another election or why would they really waste money on this ads which I think most Canadians already knew about about the Lib. leader??

Looks like Harper the mad dog sociopath is back.

Nope. It's smart politics. You define your opponent before they define you. If the Liberals weren't a bankrupt political party, they might have a chance to do the same. But alas, it's hard to raise money when your party is equated with corruption.

Seems like the Liberals have been raising quite a bit lately. We could very well see a media reply although Ignatieff could just as likely put the spotlight on Harper's frothy mouthed fear biting in Parliament. He certainly won't be like Dion and not be able land a punch on an increasingly desperate Harper.

Yes, why would we want to promote unity among Canadians? It's so much more fun to bash them!

If Harper can't even respect a man he sees in the same room with him five days a week, how can we expect him to respect average Canadians? His contempt shows in his behaviour.

Having said that, the NDP and Liberals were quite slithery too. I was disappointed to find last election that even the Greens snuck in some attacks of their own in their campaing, their only saving grace being that their attack adds were more subtle.

Shame, really. In some ways, the Greens are the Reform of the left. The Reform Party was to clean up all this mess, but once merged with the PC, that was th end of that. The Greens will likely be just as corrupt if they ever become as significant.

No wonder we have a low voter turn out. All we have to vote for now are clowns.

HAHAHA. Jdobbin you're REALLY reaching low nowadays. Your posting gets less intelligent every day.

Oh, and just because I know you love rules so much, please refer to the Rules and Guidelines regarding 3rd party insults.

Thank you.

Yes...let's play politics Kindergarten style...

Please. Respect goes both ways, and it's earned. Stephen Harper lived through 2 elections through which the Liberals basically said he was an evil anti-abortion, anti-gay crusader with a 'secret agenda' to turn Canada in to George Bush land. If politicians were going to all agree to be perfectly honest, not smear each other and get along quietly, that would be one thing, but it's not politics.

No wonder we have a low voter turn out. All we have to vote for now are clowns.

We agree on that at least.

It's true, when I first started reading here I found jdobbin to be much more level headed. These days it seems he's getting desperate and attacks the Conservatives with even the weakest of arguments :/

As for these attack ads, it's politics as usual. I haven't seen anything really bad since Paul Martin's run, e.g.: the soldiers in the street ad.

oh really - nothing better than to actually have prominent Conservative bloggers dis the ad... big time... like some of the following comments - sweet!

- a Conservative attack ad that attacks the other guy for using attack ads! Can we say "hypocritical" - yes, we can!

- a Conservative attack ad that provides free Liberal advertising... when it incredibly reproduces the Liberal message "Tory times are tough times" in the ad.

- a Conservative attack ad that personalizes rather than going after policy/agenda... weak/simplistic

- a Conservative attack ad that highlights the disconnect the Conservative party has with the real issues Canadians are concerned about

- a Conservative attack ad so unprofessional and lacking in polish/skill... clearly not ready for prime-time

amateurs

I love ads that tell folks about the other party -and bothe sides do it -then scream bloody murder when it comes back to them from the other side - it is all part ofthe game

I do not call them attack ads - that is what the smug canadian calls them - attack ads my ass.

In fact Iggy is nothing more than a transplanted American. Lots of folks out there in smug canada have no clue about this - even today.

And Harper is a control freak.

However Harper has kept things together quite well.

Iggy has some work to do to catch up - if he ever does. Better to send him home - the libs are a pain in the ass and not worthy of coming to the rulers table yet.
