  1. It seems like many people would like governments to stop worrying about climate change and focus on the economy. Imagine their surprise then, when they find out that according to a survey of economists conducted by the World Economic Forum, the top risk to the global economy is the failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation. Not only that, but many of the other top risks (large-scale involuntary migration, water crisis, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse, food crises) are all events that are associated with climate change. The lesson here is for those who think of the environmental issues as feel-good attempts by fuzzy-headed do-gooders. A healthy environment with a vibrant eco-system is not a nice-to-have, it's essential for a healthy economy.
  2. 1. Elizabeth May is far and away the best parliamentarian of any of the party leaders. She is the least partisan, the most reasonable, the most willing to work with other parties and has the most integrity. 2. Their platform is most aligned with my values as measured by the vote compass website. 3. They are the only party that makes environmental issues a priority, not just a matter of preference when they happen not to conflict with other party favorite issues. 4. They were the first (or only) party to get behind things that are so blindingly obvious, they should have been done years ago, including proportional representation, marijuana legalization and guaranteed minimum income. 5. In my riding, the Conservative party candidate has no chance of winning so I don't have to worry about vote splitting.
  3. http://arstechnica.com/science/2013/12/billion-dollar-climate-denial-network-exposed/ Strange how conservative posters on MLW have also been so blindly in support of bad science funded by corporate dollars. On one hand, we have climate change researched by scientists. On the other hand we have climate change deniers being pushed by billions of dollars donated from corporations and ultra wealthy conservatives into conservative think tanks. ... And for some reason... conservative partisans choose to support the people with the most to lose from changing business practices...
  4. According to a new study by Stanford researcher Mark Jacobson, existing alternative energy technology can replace fossil fuels at a roughly comparable cost. This corrects the assertions made by some at MLW that we need fossil fuels for the forseeable future.
