CANADIEN replied to Leafless's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Nope, but clueless is yours. And the English language came from English. Yeah right. it is because of government money the Franco-Manitobans kept their culture alive when their Canadian language was banned from the schools and the Legislature and the Courts in violation of the terms of admission of the Province in the Constitution. It's because of all the government moeny they were receiving that Franco-Ontarians fought tooth and nails when their language was banned from the schools financed by their taxes. And the Acadians were rolling in dough when they were WALKING to New Brunswick from the lands in which they had been exiled. Whatever. official including of course appearing on business signs of private business. Here we go again. No language other than English in commerce. That's what you call freedom. Hypocrite. -

Wasilla is not even one of the 5 most populated towns in Alaska. I would not dismiss Governor Palin because she was the mayor of a small town, but those who would dismiss the former mayor of a city of 200000 people should look at whom their party chose. -

Good one. An insult to anyone with responsabilities for job training programs, food bank,s voters registration drives, community groups, kid hockey program.. Clever... Too bad about the fact that programs that make the poor poorer and thetoric demonizing and belittling them is more likely to come from the Republican ranks. Rudy Giuliani saying things that make sense. Wierdest things have happened. Good one... Did the Democrats release the number of votes by candidate? And the quote by barack Obama mocking Sarah Palin is where? Could it be because there are no victory in Iraq? Good one. -

In the words of early architects of the residential school program, repeated by PM Harper when he rightly apoligized for it, the aim was to "kill the Indian in the Child". Children in those schools were regularly beaten for speaking their own Canadian languages even among themselves in the schoolyard. The objective was clear. Like the fact that after denying it you will probably glorify it. -

You mean like the English language was imported? *WARNING - I am making fun of Leafless' statement * Thanks for reminding me that I don't pay taxes. News (also known as facts) to you. French was, is and will be spoken in Gravelbourg and St.-Boniface, in Heast and in Caraquet not because of government money, but because peopledefended their right as CANADIANS to speak and use it in the face of discrimination and attempts at assimilation. Typical Leafless. In one posting, you claim that you don't care what languages Canadians choose to use, and in another you lament the fact that there are no initiative that would terminate a language. -

He rules the world, didn't care about security when he was down here, and instructed his followers to turn the other cheek. But that's besides the point. As bad as it was, did I need to write "WARNING: this is a joke"? -

Yet you advocate the banning of languages other than English from commercial signage. You have denounced the Harper government for apoligizing for a policy that was aimed at destroyed Native CANADIAN languages and cultures. You don't want municipalities and provinces to provide services in both English and French. And you have make a fool of yourself by finding fault a number of time with the language I use to identify what country I am proudly from. What is laughable is that you are so clueless you don't see your own hypocrisy. Good question. Why should anyone tolerate something that does not exist? -

Let me check... Yes, Quebec is part of Canada. Therefore, since as you admit yourself French is the language of a region of Canada, it is most definitely not a foreign language. -

Many people are under the impression that Palin was brought on the ticket to appeal to independent women and Clinton followers. Independent women maybe. Clinton followers? Palin's positions are on many point the opposite of Clinton's. I think the reasons she's on the ticket are: - she's new; - she has a bit of a a "ordinary jane" air to her - she appeals to the social conservative/evangelical Christian base of the Republican party, which was so lukewarm towards the McCain campaign that the possibility they'd just stay home on Eeelection Day was a bigger threat than indepedant flocking to Obama -

In bringing attention to the fact Palin's political experience is mostly at the municipal level and claiming that it doesn't prepare her fpr the issue that may face if she is elected and than McCain dies, the Democrats are not doing anything the Republican haven't been doing regarding Obama's experience as a State lawmaker and member of the US Senate. If the Republican campaign wants to play the "before becoming a politician, Obama was just coordonating tutoring and mentoring programs for youth at trisk, job training programs, and a successfull voter registration drive" card, they better watch whose pre-political life they stack it again. Because while McCain's war experience is very impressive, Palin's pre-politics resume is a bit thin. -

If she had said something like "a mayor is a bit like a community organizer, except that mayors answer to the whole community", it would have been right, it would have been clever, and you would have a point. What she did was to dismiss people who work and lead community organizations as people who have no responsibility. On this one, she didn't know what she was talking about. -

CANADIEN replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Far from brillant, that bit was condescending, and showed a gross misunderstanding of the work people who head countless community organisations do. And I am not just talking "left wing" organizations here, but organisations of all political stripes, in all areas of society, both volunteers and people doing it as their paid job. -

That's why major politicians have speechwriters. I reead the speech, didn't listen to it. Sounding scripted as a lot more to do with the delivery than with the text. Mind you, I would have expected her to sound scripted. Not because she iss asocial conservative, not because I think she brings no qualification with her (as I said, both she and Obama bring more relevant to the job that Abraham Lincoln did), but because it was her first speech before a country - actually a worldwide - audience. -

CANADIEN replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Just took a quick look at her speech. Not bad for the most... The right words at the right time, aimed squarely at Republicans who may not be that hot about McCain. And then... I had to laugh when she was praising herself for her opposition to the "bridge to nowhere"... which she was supporting not two years ago. And there a few pearls: I hope she knew at least a few of them. She was running for city council in a town of about 1000 people, where she had llived most of her life. She is now running for the job of Vice-President of a country of over 300 MILLION people. When you do that, you need voter profiles and focus group. Go tell to leaders of CONSERVATIVE Ccommunity organizations that they don't have responsibilities. It may a perk in Juneau to have your own driver. when you are Vice-President of the United States, the Secret Service driver is even more important than your seatbelt. Not the best way to prove you understand what the job you're seeking entails. Talk about corny.
