Mispronounciating words, saying that there are 57 states or saying that Ivana Trump represents culture, doesn't win or lose an election. But a candidate's view on when or how the Universe was created matters more than you think. Over 60 percent of Americans believe the Genesis story to be litterally true, and the issue of the place of creationism in the school curriculum is a politically charged one.

No Jail for Guelph Child Porn Girl
CANADIEN replied to Ontario Loyalist's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
People posessing child porn are in posession of the product of a crime. That makes them criminals, and they should be treated as such. Plus, they contribute to and encourage secual abuse of children. -
The Madame Curie thing is priceless.

Now, I admit, this one has nothing to do with her political abilities or her capacity to do the jobb she is seeking, plus it was before she even became mayor, but I am looking forward to see how those who blasted her opponent as dissing Alaska will react to this one. From the Anchorage Daily News The bad bad leftist press that sought to embarass her in anticipation of her VP campaign 10 years later.

Got to admit. Love the part when she praises herself for not having used lobbyist. Looks like she forgot the fact that as mayor she hired a lobbyist whose efforts netted her town once of the highest federal founding-to-population in the USA.

Russell by-law spat sparks bilingual study

I forgot. Votes by the duly elected representatives of the people were not good enough, since they didn't reflect your prejudice. Don't worry, English-speaking Canadians who have a clue know what their country is, and they it's called Canada. -

Let me make it clear in Palinesque... that is words that won't cause the clueless to look even more clueless. If executive experience is the measure of what makes a good President of the United States, then two years is is not enough. And executive experience, no matter the lenght, has little to do with measuring up to the task, as Lincoln proved (by being up to the task) and Varter and Bush Jr proved (by not being up to it). But I forgot... in the same way that you are oblivious to any sense of decency and understanding of right and wrong, you are oblivious to the fact that it is the McCain/Palin campaign and their supporters who are saying - she has executive experience, that proves she can do the job. To you being a right-wing fanatic all the qualification someone needs these days. -

 It is because Abraham Lincoln was in my opinion the greatest President the US ever has that I view the "but she has executive experience/ but he has legislative experience" arguments as non-sense. But if the Palinites want to play the experience card, they've got to realize that by tthe standard they set 2 years is not enough. PS: I would consider Wilson to have been better than the average Presidents. Bush Jr... the only reason he is not the worse US President of the 20th century after Harding and Carter is that he became President in the 21th century  -

In other words... the journalist didn't use the definition I coined, so Palin can be excused for not even realizing at first the question was about foreign policy? The way straws are being grasped at, I am surprised there are any left around. -
Neither Democrats or Republicans are monolithic blocks. There may be a lot registered Democrats with social conservative views that you think. These people now have a reason to vote Republican.

Abortion as a sacro-saint sacrament. As someone who opposes abortion, i am always surprised by the absurdity of the "they treat abortion as a sacrament" label. It is an insult to facts, and an insult to logic. It's funny, by the way, to see all the social "the place of a woman is at home and God calls her to be obediant" conservatives now praising Palin for being independant. Social conservative politicians are granted an exemption.

True, the Iroquois didn't have a writing system. But the transmission of tradition and knowledge that takes place in oral societies is a pretty good way of ensuring that the core of the message is preserved (this we who we are, this is how we govern ourselves), even under the layers of myths and legends. It is interesting that a lot of what the Iroquois say about how they were governing themselves is confirmed in the writings of the first European visitors, and through archeological research. Also, knowledge of the stories that tell of the past is shared by all in an oral society. Even when only a few people are in charge of telling the story, all have heard it times and times again; someone deviates from the story, and people know. In contrast, until public education appeared, that type of knowledge was limited to a priviledged few in societies relying on the written word. When the law is written and 99% of the population doesn't know how to read and is even forbidden to learn, the ones who write can say the law and history is whatever they say it is. I would argue that was a lot easier to make up facts in these conditions.

Most Americans (and most Canadians) don't care much about foreign policy. So the fact that Palin doesn't know what the Bush doctrine is something that will leave most voters indifferent. But it is one thing not to care that much about foreign policy. It is another thing for a candidate to the job of VP of the United States to be asked a question about the US foreign policy and not even realize at first that it is about foreign policy. -

That Palin has executive experience says nothing about how good of a President she would be if she ever had to sit in that seat. But what she did in her executive jobs may be telling. Look at Palin the mayor. On the plus side, she vigourously pushed for funding for local projects, she cut her own salary, she was a mayor close to her constituants (OK, it's easier to phone one citizen every day to check if things go well when you are mayor of a small town than when you are President, but she still did it). And she got elected twice. On the minus side. Mayor Palin had a bit of an authoritarian and vengeful streak, as demonstrated by the fact she fired or tried to fire most of the city's department heads for "lack of loyalty", namely their support for her opponent during the election campaign. The fact that one of the city officials who received a dismissal letter (later rescinded) was the Chief Librarian who had just answered in the negative on a rethorical question from the mayor on whether or not she would ban books doesn't help give a strong impression that Palin opposes censorship. Mayor Palin also disbanded the city's Liquor Task force, putting an end to its effort to raise awareness of alcohol related problem, while expending business hours for the two local bars - within days of becoming mayor. While Palin was claiming that managing a budget of $6 million and a staff of about 50 wasn't rocket science (and it isn't), an administrator had to be hired to manage the day to day business. And Wasilla was apparently the only town in Alaska that was making victims of rape pay for their rape kit - I hope Palin won't claim that she couldn't have known it was happening because of the size of city staff. her tenure as Mayor says a lot about Palin, a populist woman who share many of the traits of ordinary folks, someone who will go to bat for her constituants, but also a rigid social conservative who doesn't stand for disagreement and opposition, a so-so administrator at best, and at worse someone who has little empathy for rape victims or just doesn't care. -
Perhaps what Democrats need is another 16 year-old "celebrity" like Jamie Lynn Spears getting pregnant and right-wing pundits criticizing the parents. Looks like a lot of people need to be reminded of the hypocrisy of people who were all over the Spears and called them irresponsible parents because of their daughter's pregnancy only to praise the Palins when the same thing happens to them.

And Abraham Lincoln had virtually no executive experience or legislative experience, something I have said a few times. A two year experience as state governor does not constitute qualification to be President of the United States, since it says nothing on what a candidate's performance will be if they get the job. After all, Bush Jr.'s failure proves that it takes more than executive experience to be able do the job. -

So here we go with the "Palin is a woman, so any negative comment on her is sexist" stupidity again.
